Hello there everyone I am new to this site, had my lab Jet for nearly 8 years until he suddenly passed away 3weeks ago. Found it very hard to stay at home to walk in from work so we decided to get another puppy, we both work and have got someone to look after him mostly in these hours but was wondering how long do we start to leave him for just to pop out so he gets used to staying on his own or is it too early for him at 8 week old.

I started leaving Harley for 30-45 mins at about 9 weeks old as I had to go back to work (my neighbour popped in every half hour). By 11weeks old I was leaving her for an hour - 2 hours. By 4 months I left her for 3 hours max. Everyone is different and has different ideas, but the way I did it worked for me Good luck and let us know how you get on
Re: New puppy Thank you for your reply so quickly, our new pup is named Rocky and yes a male of course. I might leave it another week before I leave him for a little while, has he needs to start to be on his own for short bursts but it's a bit of a worry. Sounds like your routine worked for you so hopefully next week for me too. I will let you know how we do and thanks again, would like to see a pic of yours too if that's ok.
Re: New puppy Hi Tina! Welcome to the forum. Lovely to hear you have a puppy after losing your last dog. I hope it all goes well for you. Although I have been a member for a little while I don't have my pup yet, so you are ahead of me. I go to choose her tomorrow! (Tina didn't know - everybody else does!) I can give you no advice apart from read Pippa's puppy book! It's very reassuring.
Re: New puppy Hi Tina, I recently downloaded an app onto my phone and laptop called Jumicam. As long as you have a webcam either attached to the laptop or built in you can see your pup live on webcam when you are out I use it every day as Harley is no longer in her crate so is in the kitchen and I like to check up to see if she is ok when I'm at work My routine worked really well and still does at nearly 10 months old Here is a recent photo of her; DSC_0897 by ternayacummings, on Flickr Look forward to hearing about how you get on
Re: New puppy Hi Tina, welcome from me an Lilly. Lilly is now 4 years old. I also work, and although my kids were at home with Lilly from when we got her at around 11 weeks, we started leaving her regularly in her crate to get her aclimatised for longer periods. A crate and several kongs are recommended essential for working parents! Good luck jac

I started leaving Charlie for a minute (would give him a kong, switch on the alarm, leave, and lock the door and stand in the street for a minute and be back before he'd have looked up from his kong and missed me). Then 5, then 10...and so on. I started this right away at 8 weeks and worked up longer periods. When Charlie was 9.5 weeks, I felt comfortable leaving him for up to 1.5 hours then moved to 2 hours. I had a puppy care service that called in and spent at hour with him, then left him alone for another 2 hours. This gave me a 5 hour window in which to be away from the house. Puppy service would take him out to the garden, play with him, refresh water, newspaper and leave him with more stuffed kongs.

Re: New puppy ;DThank you all for making me so welcome, this topic as helped me so far and started leaving Rocky for short lengths of time he does cry and I sneak back in and can hear him but something he will get used to over time. I did have my other dog Jet from a pup and forgot the routine I had with him and this website wasn't around then soim finding it amazing to ask and chat with all of you thanks again. ;D

Re: New puppy Welcome to the forum! Sorry to hear of the loss of your old dog, but how exciting you have a new puppy! When I first got Penny is was home for three days, then had three half days at work, and then went back to work normally but was able to come home at lunchtimes. My partner works normal hours (mon-fri) and at the time I worked 7 days over 5 so she was left all day usually between 3 and 4 days a week. She definitely got thrown in at the deep end but she coped with brilliantly. I have now changed jobs and do my have the luxury of being able to come home at lunch, but Penny is quite happy being left 9-5 everyday. In fact I think she copes with one long period of seperation better than two shorter ones (when I was coming home at lunch). Let us know how you're getting on!
