Published yesterday, this study compares the health effects of neutering in Golden Retrievers (a breed with known susceptibility to certain cancers), with that of Labrador Retrievers.

That provides food for thought, indeed! I was particularly interested to read about the indication that neutering may not provide any protection against mammary cancer. Also I was surprised at the relatively low incidence reported of pyometra infections, even in older unneutered female labs and Goldens.

Very interesting too on joint development - and fascinating that different breeds have such different reactions.

Very interesting thank you very much for posting, it all helps when thinking about the "when" or "if" regarding castration or spaying of our dogs. I am certainly erring based on all evidence, to hold off for as long as possible, or whether we need to go the route of castration at all at this point.
