Argh! I am so hoping this is not what I think it is!!! Please please please! Yesterday with the weather being so nice we were doing some gardening so we had Penny out in the garden with us all day. She was loving the sun and was running around with some toys, playing with the cut grass, just having a good time. We took and break and we're playing a little but of fetch up and down the garden. In the middle of the garden we have a small 1foot high wall and she just loves to jump over it when running around. She knocked herself on it and was limping for a minute or so, then was fine after that. This morning she's a lot more lame. We had a little 5 min walk and there's definate lameness there. She wasn't weight bearing at all when she trotted up the stairs when I went to get changed for work but walking around the house normally she does weight bear but it's definately lame. When she sits down the bad leg sticks out to the side and when she lies down she fidgets so she's not lying on it. I've seen this before, and the way she holds her leg in a certain way... I've seen it in dogs that have torn their cruciate ligament. The way she was haring around the garden yesterday would certainly have given her the opportunity to do it. I gave her some metacam before I went off to work and will see how it is when I get back later. I'm really hoping it's just a sprain or her hips are sore after running around so much as I do not need this, she does not need this, so soon after her hip dysplasia diagnosis and were supposed to be starting physio soon and joining a new Rally class. Argghhhhh!!
Re: No, no, no... Oh dear Lauren, poor little soul , hopefully the metacam will reduce any swelling and she will be fine, fingers crossed for her, and you x
Re: No, no, no... Oh dear, fingers crossed for you and Penny. She certainly doesn't need that....here's hoping it's something minor. Keep us posted!
Re: No, no, no... Fingers and paws crossed for penny, hope it is nothing serious and that she is soon like her normal self again.
Re: No, no, no... I really hope it's nothing to bad. You are definitely going through the wars atm. Sending you big hugs from me and licks from Harley to Penny
Re: No, no, no... Thanks everyone. She seems maybe marginally better now, but I can't tell for certain. It could just be the pain relief. I'm reluctant to take her to the vet just yet as it's only been 24 hours and if it's a sprain or pulled muscle it could take a couple of days to get better, plus I worry that I'm overreacting! No walks today or tomorrow and I'll carry on with the metacam for a couple of days and see how she goes.
Re: No, no, no... So sorry to hear this. I hope that it isn't her cruciate ligament. Fingers crossed for you. If you really think it is though, don't delay very long - the faster it is treated, the less chance there is of meniscus damage and then arthritis. It often can be diagnosed without a GA (but you need a vet that will spend time on the examination, and watch her walk, not one that just says "rest for 10 days then come back if not better").
Re: No, no, no... Thanks Julie, I have a good orthopaedic vet for her hips so if tree is no improvement I will take her to see him.
Re: No, no, no... Oh dear Lauren. Keeping my fingers crossed. I know I panicked when Lilly twisted her wrist and couldn't weight bear for half an hour. It was off to the vets, completely over reacted. But they are such a worry. Keep us updated xx
Re: No, no, no... Poor penny. Just caught up with this. How is she today Lauren ? ??? Everything crossed that it's nothing major.
Re: No, no, no... Ah poor Penny. Hope its not cruciate. They are such a worry. Lots of cuddles to her from me and meg. Jen xx
Re: No, no, no... Hello everyone Sorry for my absence the last few days, been quite busy. Well Penny seems absolutely fine now. After 48hrs of rest and metacam she's back to normal so hopefully it was just her hips being sore after running around like a hooligan. Seems strange how she was holding the leg out to the side when sitting though and how she wouldn't lie on it, cos it was just that one leg. On her X-rays the vet said both hips were in the same state, there wasn't one that was worse than the other. However I have noticed that she does seem a bit weaker on her hind legs now than before. Extra anxious to receive our first physio appointment now. We should be getting a call sometime before Tuesday about it. On another note we got the 'official' results of her X-rays back from the states and it's exactly what me and the ortho vet thought - her hips come 50% out of the socket. Apparently it gives her a firstly good prognosis though as they think she can live with hops this loose for a long time and not have many major problems. Hips they are over 70% out of the socket are classed as high risk and we are nowhere near that. The word from the PennHip people is that apparently (and i was shocked at this) Penny's hips are about average for a Labrador!
Re: No, no, no... Thanks Naya Yeah I'm not sure if it's good news or not... She still needs to have the physiotherapy and pain relief as needed so it's not like it's changed anything there... I don't really know...
