This mornings walk started with a very horrible incident which I still feel a bit weird about. I say weird because I'm not sure how I feel about it, sad probably. :(

I've mentioned before we walk with two rottweiller bitches and I've mentioned before next door have a little Jack Russell bitch about 14 years old who has always been allowed to roam and run out at people and cars.

We met my friend at the bottom of the drive. As we walked passed next door the jack Russell came running after us. It bounced around the rotties then bounced around us. We must be the only dogs this little dog doesn't try and eat. She was being a bit of a pest really we couldn't get away. My neighbour came out I thought to get the dog but actually to ask me to pop around at lunch time. He was just telling us how they thought the dog was at deaths door at the weekend when it ran at the rotties and they pounced !!!!!

My friend ended up on the floor trying to drag them off her jeans cut, knee bleeding and elbow bleeding. Of course I'm holding my dogs so I kicked one of the rots hoping to distract it so the little dog could get away but no. I put both my dogs in my left hand, grabbed the collar of a rottweiller and pulled its head up along with the jack Russell in its mouth !!!!!! :(. My neighbour got his dog out of the rottweillers mouth put it on the ground and told it to go home !!!!!!! My friend was very upset. However as unbelievable as this sounds I think they were playing. If the rottweillers had been attacking it would have come out in two pieces and their body language showed no aggression at all.

Unfortunately when I went next door at lunch time the little dog was not breathing very well. To be honest if my dog was breathing like that I'd have it to the vet. I actually think it died before I left because it had stopped making the strange breathing noise . :(. I think had it been younger it would have been ok but because of its age and it obviously had health problems it was too much for the poor little thing.

It's left me feeling very peculiar. Tomorrow I will be walking passed again with the rottweillers. :-\

How terribly sad Jen :( :( The owner of the terrier must be very uncaring indeed if he just allows the dog to roam and be a pest . Poor little devil , what a sad end that must have been and upsetting for all too :( :(

How upsetting that must of been. It does sound like the rotties were playing, like you said, the small dog would of been seriously injured if they weren't. I hope your friend with the rotties is ok? How sad that the small jack Russell passed away in the way it did ;(
Hope you are ok! Sending you big hugs x

What an awful thing to happen. Poor little dog to have such an uncaring owner. I don,t understand how they could have ignored a dog with laboured breathing. Some people are not fit to own a dog, or any living creature.

Jen, that is really horrible. Poor little thing. That owner should be banned from having a dog. Is your friend ok? Horrible experience for you both. lots of hugs to you and waggy tails from meg.

Rottie have powerful jaws and maybe the JR had internal bleeding? I cannot understand why the owner didn't take the JR to the vet as it may have easily died from old age and how it was at the weekend. It is something that could have happened to anyone and just a tragic accident. I feel the owner is at fault for letting his dog run around when the others were on leads. Poor Rottie owner must feel gutted.

Oh my goodness, what a horrible and upsetting incident for you :( I hope you're feeling a bit better now you've had time to calm down. I don't know what I would have done in that situation. It must have been very difficult!

I'm shocked at the attitude of the JRT's owner - he seems quite uncaring if he just told the dog to go home after what happened. The poor old thing could have been in shock. I hope he did take it to the vet.

Your friend with the rotties must have felt awful too. I love rotties and would have had one if my friends and family didn't beleive all the stereotyping about them.

What a dreadful experience. I feel for everyone involved except the JRT owner. Poor little dog.

Sounds like the Rotties were definitely pulling their punches but it'd still greatly worry me if my dog picked a small dog up in its mouth. :(

    Re: Not a good morning.

    Thank you all.

The little dog has been a pest for the last 14 years but only because it's been allowed to be and it was a nice little dog really. I've looked after it a few times when they and all their family have gone away together and I was always amazed at despite it's age it would trot off ahead of me around our field a happy little thing. I don't think it's that they dont care it's more their generation and background. Not that I'm saying all that generation would behave like that, my elders wouldnt but you'd understand if you knew them it's difficult to explain.

I think it left me feeling weird for a few reasons. First it was the fact the little dog looked like a stuffed toy in the rotweillers mouth. I've witnessed dog attacks on my old lab but although he was attacked by dogs bigger and smaller than him there was never a massive difference in size like today, well except when a little heeler went for him but it was the other way around. ::) Also under other circumstances I would probably have something to say about the rottweillers and their owner but she's my friend and I know how upset she will still be. She is well aware of what she has on the end of the lead and what they are capable of. She does her best to avoid or pre empt situations. The other thing is I can't understand why my neighbour didn't get his dog and take it away when it was running in and out at my dogs.

I don't know for sure if the JRT is dead but I will be very surprised if it isn't. The problem is it won't take long for word to get around and I bet by the time it gets back the rotties will have brutally savaged a little dog which is not what happened. It was a horrible accident and such a shame.

Might it be worth you and your friend visiting the JRT owner to see how the dog is? Bit of PR that might sooth any ruffled feathers and head off any public exaggeration of the story?

Good idea Rachael. My friend has more obvious wounds than JRT had. ::)

To be honest my neighbours were very good about it although that might not be a surprise given their attitude. They told her not to worry its just dogs being dogs. ::)

I struggle to understand people's preconceptions about rottweilers. We fostered a few when I was a kid and although they were such lovely dogs people used to cross the road to get around us! I have seen more unacceptable behaviour from the likes of poodles and even a king Charles cavalier than with rottweilers.
