.....Lilly decided to join the poorly pup society.
A frolic with some friends before teatime resulted in a trip to the vets and diagnosis of a wrist sprain (thankfully - I was convinced it was her elbow :( )
She was struggling with her walking - first 45 mins she wasn't weight-bearing at all. We think she either stood on a dummy and rolled over it with her foot, or went down a bit of a hole. My friend was pretty sure her shoulder went down and she rolled. Let out a low pitched howl lasting about 30secs. As you might expect, after getting home, phoning the vet, then 30mins in the car, she was a little better and although limped into the vets room, she was at least weight-bearing.
As she already gets an NSAID regularly (half a Previcox) the vet gave her a "weak opiod" and instruction to double up the Previcox to a whole dose tonight with a light tea. Probably got a "slightly less than normal" tea as opposed to a light one, and she ate it although maybe a little slower than normal.
Since then she has been what I could only desccribe a "zoned out" almost like she is fighting sleep and not quite getting there, but in a fully prone position, not her usual upside down relaxing in her beanbag kind of way. Several times she has been to the door to go out and takes a few steps before seeming to "freeze" tail between legs, then loses the strength in her back legs. A bit of encouragement gets her going.
No poos or pees yet. Peed 10mins before her accident though.
Kind of uncertain now best to help.
Leave her for a few more hours then take her out?
She is whining on and off.
I do think its the injection effect rather than the initial injury though. No idea what it was though, or how long it might last.

    Any tips, comments, advice??
    Any would be welcome.

Oh, the poor girl :( I'm sure she thought that the other Labrador Site invalids were getting far too much attention :)

Obi was very, very woozy when he got home from the vet last Friday and it was from the sedative and whatever painkiller/anti-inflamm he had been given. It was a struggle to get him out of the vet's surgery and into the car as he kept falling asleep on the floor.

Our old boy, Nicolae, was also completely zoned out if he had a higher than normal dose of NSAIDs - he had a life-long neck injury and if it froze up he had a large loading dose of Metacam - this always produced behaviour very similar to the way you are describing Lilly now. Once the vet gave him Metacam and some other anti-inflamm together and it totally knocked him around and he seemed kind of distressed (confused and agitated in a semi-conscious kind of way) by the experience - but he was good the next morning.

Judging by my boys' reactions to these things, what you're seeing is normal but she should be much brighter tomorrow. I'd take her out soonish and then again in a few hours.

    Thanks Rachael.
She keeps asking out every 20 mins or so but keeps doing the freezing thing and whining without doing anything "purposeful".
I have persuaded her into her beanbag so I hope she will drop off for a wee bit.
I guess I will be doing a sleep-over with her tonight.

She probably just feels really weird and zonked out. I'm sure she'd appreciate some cuddles tonight :)

Well. Slightly fraught this morning. Got to bed for about an hour at 1am then she started wheeking. Got up and slept on the sofa beside her. She slept a little but regularly whining during the night. Can't really do anything to settle her.
Had my breakfast at 5.30 ::)
    Lilly got hers a 6am.
She has pee'd but not poo'd unfortunately. Keeps asking out but just standing on the back doorstep.
Comes back in a minute later.
She must be tired (I am)
Unfortunately going to have to leave her home alone this morning :(

I do hope Lilly is doing better today, poor little mite, she really has been in the wars.

I work in a school - here is my suggestion for the sick note:

Please excuse my daughter as it was imperative that she stay home today to look after a sick member of the family. ;)

Gute Besserung. It's awful when they have hurt themselves. Hope you manage to get a better night's sleep tonight.

Oh I hope she is feeling better today, poor girl!! Not at all a bad thing to have your daughter home to care for Lilly :) A great idea in fact.

    Re: Not to be outdone.....

I think Lilly is feeling a bit better this evening.
I phoned the vets at lunchtime as my daughter said she was still pretty sad and whimpering.
He told me that she had been given doggy Temgesic (buprenorphine) and that it sounded like she was having a prolonged hypersensitivity reaction to it. He reckoned it was quite likely she was having what my OH described later as "a bad trip". He said this could last up to 36 hours
She is definitely a bit better, and currently reasonably soundly asleep but the occasional wee wimper only.
Much improved from this time last night.
Oh! And she poo'd this afternoon ;D
Thinks she's on the mend ;D

    Thanks all.
