Murphy has done something wierd to his back left leg. This morning whilst sat with my husband who was fishing, he suddenly jumped about and shook his leg and then started chewing his foot. So I immediately thought he had something stuck in it so looked but couldn't see anything. He was then walking a big funny and when I got home carried on chewing it and also one of his front ones. After that he seemed fine so this afternoon just took him for a walk in woods where he was running around like a mad thing and went swimming and was absolutely normal and fine, but then when he jumped out of the car when we got home he went lame and wouldn't put weight on it etc. so me and oh looked at it again and can't see anything odd at all. He's now putting weight on it but not walking properly, but is still wanting to play and jump around in the garden but is not using the leg properly. It's really wierd coz it doesn't really seem like it's bothering him as he wants to play and is running around but he is slightly limping on it and it just doesn't look right when he's walking. I think il take him to the vet in the morn if it's not normal but any ideas in the meantime? Anything to check for? X
Re: Odd lameness in back leg Could have pulled a muscle maybe, but I think you are right to get him checked out, just to be on the safe side, hoping all will be well for all of you .
Re: Odd lameness in back leg
Maybe he was stung? Poor love I hope he will be OK x
That's what I thought, but then I saw he was chewing the front foot too. Could he have grass mites or something similar?
Re: Odd lameness in back leg Or maybe a grass seed these can cause discomfort and sometimes need surgically removing. If he keeps chewing his foot Frankie I would get him to the vet as they can be dangerous even though you wouldn't think so x
Re: Odd lameness in back leg Thanks everyone, he is def lame on his back leg. I think chewing the front one was just a coincidence and unrelated as hes not done it since but he is still limping on his back leg. . Will keep you all updated x
Re: Odd lameness in back leg Ok he just got off the sofa and was limping badly again and. Also just googled grass seed in paw and freaked myself out so weve just had a proper look again with a torch and there are 2 tiny black things stuck in his paw. We tried to get them with tweezers but couldnt. Should we call out of hours vet or wait until the morning?!
Re: Odd lameness in back leg Frankie, could the black things be tiny thorns as I don't think grass seeds would be Black? When you were fishing were there any thorny bushes etc. around he could have stepped on?
Re: Odd lameness in back leg Not that I saw. I also didnt see any grass seed. The first thing i thought was a little fish hook but its too small for that. He hasnt been chewing it though and he was very good letting us look but as soon as we tried to get it he flinched and shook his leg. X
Re: Odd lameness in back leg When you rub your finger over it is it sharpe? In my own personal experience grass seeds cause excessive licking of the area
Re: Odd lameness in back leg My oh says no. He says on reflection he thinks they might be scabs? So really dont know. Off to the vets in the morn! X
Re: Odd lameness in back leg That's strange I wonder why he has scabs as he would have been lame sooner due to the cut/graze. Good luck at the vet and let us know what he says. xx
Re: Odd lameness in back leg Its really odd. Iv just looked myself amd now cant see anything at all apart from where it looks like mud has gotten into his hair follicles. Also justlet him outside where he was fine jumping around and no obvious lameness. Its wierd coz hel be fine one minute and then be lame the next, hes done it about 3 times. I hope its nothing and hes just being silly lol x
Re: Odd lameness in back leg Riley had intermittent lameness quite a while ago and I think it was due to getting stung by something, plant or animal......very worrying though and I agree you need to make absolutely sure there's nothing in there so it would be vet for me! Good luck, hope you get to the bottom of it and all is well!
Re: Odd lameness in back leg Hello, Just got back from the vets. No foreign bodies which is good, she thinks hes pulled a muscle and so is on strict rest for a week. Not even short lead walks. Just loo in the garden and that s it! She hasnt given him pain relief as she thinks he needs the pain to be there asa. Reminder so he doesnt damage it even more, which i agree with. When my backs bad i dont always take pain killers so i know if im making it worse. Also made me laugh, she didnt charge me, and said its coz I see her so much. I said its coz im such a worrier and she said theyd rather that than leaving things to get worse x
Re: Odd lameness in back leg Glad you have had him checked and it's nothing serious good luck in keeping him calm for the next week
