Hi everyone, Well Otis is four months now, and because of the layout of my house and garden, theres a path that i share with the neighbours that cuts across the back of the house between the garden and back door, so every time I want to take him out I have to carry him to the garden gate, and blimey is he getting heavy. So Ive come over to my parents for a week as theyre back door goes straight into a big back gardenwhich is a much easier arrangemet. Im wondering if my layout and the fact i carry Otis to the garden is slowing his toilet training down ? Going to take him on a lead to the garden in future. Anyway im keeping a tally of wees and poos outside an in, to see if Im making progress, first day at my parents, and he has done one wee and one poo indoors, which is really good for Otis. Going by what I have heard on here, it seems like Otis is really behind with his toilet training. The other thing is if I didnt take him out he would wee and poo everywhere, he never goes to the back door or tells me he wants to go out. Im sorry to go on so much, but it really worries me, I keep thinking Ill have a grown dog who isnt housetrained ! Thankyou for your comments in advance, Maggiex
Re: Otis toilet training continued hi maggie , i think from what i have read they are all different regarding when they are toilet trained,...just like kids i would be putting him on a lead to go out,......take him out as often as possible,.......i was lucky as in my kitchen i have a breakfast bar with stools, right by my back, i sat there for the first week , as soon as i thought he wanted to go i opened the door,......i never moved from that seat for a full week, he soon realised if you can get a seat at your back door as soon as you think he wants to go take him out, have the lead at the ready, hopefully he will soon realise good luck maggie
Re: Otis toilet training continued Don't worry, Maggie, he'll get there in the end. Charlie has only just started to ask to go out at nearly 6months - he just sits quietly by the door, so I've still got to watch out for him. When they are learning I don't think there is anything for it but keep taking them every hour, reward like mad when they go in the garden (maybe up the reward - what are you using?), relax for an hour, take them out, tak them out 20 mins later if they don't go the first time... it's constant, and boring, but it does work in the end!
Re: Otis toilet training continued Hi, Well at the moment if he either wees or poos, I start saying good boy good boy repeatedly till he finishes then, well done Otis, then he comes to me for his treat which is three bits of kibble, mmm maybe I should change it to a bit of cheese, or I sometimes give him these cut up natures menu treats from Pets at home, Thankyou for your help and support, much appreciated, x
Re: Otis toilet training continued Hmm...don't want to discourage your plan ;D but choose your cue words carefully. A friend of mine had a collie trained to "go wee-wees" on that command word. Her mother-in-law who looked after the dog on holidays was constantly frustrated when the dog wee'd in the house every time she asked him if "he wanted to go wee-wees?" She never really caught onto what she was doing wrong. He was a lovely dog, sadly passed on now. The moral of the story is..... are you possibly teaching Otis to wee/poop to the command word "good boy"?? I think we may have discussed this in the past too. Gosh, we have discussed so many things on this forum ;D
Re: Otis toilet training continued He He... heres the thread.......http://www.thelabradorsite.com/forums/index.php/topic,925.msg5121.html#msg5121 Guess I've told my wee story before ;D
Re: Otis toilet training continued Charlie wees on the cue "peep peep" (which I decided on) and poos on "poop action!" which OH decided on : : - OH was the one who stood out in the rain waiting for the poo. Serves me right...
Re: Otis toilet training continued I do see what you mean, but its not really a cue word ( or is it ??) because I only start saying it when he starts to go, so its a reward thing. Mmmm maybe cos I dont have a cue word, maybe I should start doing that, hope its not to late to start now ? Think, busy busy sounds the best bet. Thanks Jac, Maggiex
Re: Otis toilet training continued I consider I have got a toilet trained dog.....from his arrival at 5 months had 5 accidents in the house!one of which was this morning ....my first morning back! But I haven't got it on cue........I just did it the way my Mum has always done it ie out every hour or when he showed the signs. He goes and sits by the door if he wants to go.when we go out to his place in the garden I do say wee wee but he does it in his own time.....which doesn't take long so I've never felt like I needed to get it on a command and he does 2 poos a day in exactly the same place now I've got his tummy settled....have I done this wrong?Oh something else duh! Maggie just keep persevering,I'm the proof that just regular visits out will crack it. Im Gutted Dex weed in his cage.My flight was delayed so it was gone 3 am when I got in.....he went absolutely nuts ;D ;D ;D.we were playing in the garden,he was drinking his paddling pool and then drinking his bowl of water and didn't wee before I went up to bed....thought he would hold it until my alarm went off 5.20 ....but alas he didn't poor fella.Hanging out with him ALL day today!
Re: Otis toilet training continued Poor boy sounds he was SO excited to see you! I don't use a key word for toileting. Never even knew to try it at that stage. Probably used good girl too She doesn't pee or poop to order but has a bladder like a camel. Jac
