We met our lovely 2nd generation labradoodle friend Pepper today - she's a complete sweetheart and LOVES to play. She and Riley ran and ran and ran and wrestled and wrestled and wrestled. It's warm but not hot here this morning but when we got home Riley was panting extremely quickly and couldn't settle as he was just too warm. I hosed down his armpits and groin and got the fan out of the loft and he's managed to cool down and is resting quietly under the fan now.

Be careful out there people xxx

Good advice. Charlie was panting for longer than he normally would when we got home last night, he settled on the cool kitchen tiles and it wore off. But we've had an early walk today, and will go to the river later, when it's a bit cooler. Taking it easy today.

I'm really surprised the UK warm weather can have this impact on dogs. I don't remember it doing so with the family dogs when I was a kid. Mind, that was North Yorkshire....

A few weeks ago I brought a 4ft paddling pool for Harley. After walks she goes straight in there to cool down :)

We had a similar problem on Sunday. We extended our walk to round up some stray teams on their DoE expedition. After two hours walking Holly was getting quite hot so I took her to a nearby pond for a dunk, after which we cooled off under the trees.

I usually carry a bottle of water and the folding waterbowl for Holly but left them in the car. I won't make that mistake again.

Even better, on hot days I take a sponge and thoroughly soak Benson (black) with water prior to his walk. This way he enjoys the walk without the stress of overheating.

Scott pants on walks a lot sooner and heavier than scout but he has a thicker coat. When we get home Scott is very sensible and lies in the shade until he's cooled down. Scout however will pester for his ball to be thrown no sense. ::)

We've just got back from a very hot (late) lunchtime walk, which I insisted was cut short, much to Charlie's disgust. He has no sense either, he'd have carried on walking. I'll take him to the river when it's cool tonight. He hasn't been out much today. So hot here!

    that's a great photo Lynne! :D

Riley has been pestering me all day but I have refused to cave and only done tiny little fun things in the shade of the apple trees. He thinks I'm boring !

I'm sorry you had a scare with Riley ,glad he was ok x It's hardwork isn't it in the heat?I actually think Dexter copes really well ,he has a totally different coat to the UK labs I've met....the actual fur strands are the same but his whole coat is thinner...I wonder if he would be the same in a cooler climate or if his fur would thicken out a bit? That was one of the things I noticed about Riley ,his coat was a lot fuller than Dex's .
I've just started hosing Dexter down before we go out at tea time ....he recovers really well when we get in by lying down damp on the tiles ......oh,or pressing himself up against the cool wooden door of his food cupboard ::)
Enjoy the warm weather but Watch your pooches carefully x

You did exactly the right thing on getting home, Barbara.

I took Tatze round the res with Zaba this morning - a long walk and lots of hoolying. But they kept jumping in the water so were just fine. Hubby is away with the good, air conditioned car just now, so the car journey bothered me more than the walk - but she was fine.

She has slept ever since, mind you!

    :)

I find the only way to keep cool is get out early, I have been out by 0800 with Hattie and she copes really well even with her coat which is being clipped next week :) Also lying on the cold stones in the utility room or back porch work really well too :) Keep cool everyone.

    Lynne that's a great picture :) x
