Hi everyone, Dexter today has been a very overexcited puppy. And when I say excited, I mean excited!

It's something we (my fiancé and I) have been trying to deal with the past few days by either ignoring the behaviour when it happens (eg. Pay no attention) and usually he calms down pretty quickly. Or we'll place him in his bed (his crate) to calm down for 5-10 minutes.
But today? Wow! Today has been a whole new level! He starts off calm, chewing and playing with his toy (eg. His Kong Wubba) but all of a sudden he's running like a mad dog around the living room and kitchen, banging into things, biting my trousers and even me when I pick him up to put him in his cage.

When he's placed in his cage, he has a tantrum and a cry and has today learnt to try and drag the blanket covering his cage through the gap of the 'roof'.

Has anyone else had this sort of situation? Any suggestions or advice would be really appreciated! Thanks in advance...

    Hi there,

Dexter's behaviour is pretty normal. Check out this article It sounds as though you are probably doing all the right things already, try not to worry, it will pass. ;D

Thanks very much Pippa. You saying we seem to be doing the right things means an awful lot! Your articles are so informative. It's like our Labrador bible at the moment! :D

This may seem a silly question, if I put Dexter in his cage for 5-10 minutes to calm down, more often than not, he falls asleep. Will he still learn he's been put in there for to calm down if he falls asleep?

    Hi there,
Whenever that situation arose for us, we just unlatched the crate door after the 5-10mins time-out, even if she was asleep, so she could then come out when she woke up.
Don't know if that was right or wrong, but seemed to work for us.

Ooo, I'll try that tomorrow. Thanks Jac!

Hopefully Dexter was just having one of 'those' days today in terms of excitement. Like I said he usually calms down pretty quickly but today he just seemed to go hyper...
