Tomorrow my OH and I are off to a wedding at which he is the best man, it's only on the other side of town but we have booked a room in the hotel for the night and as it's such a long day Penny needed a babysitter! So tomorrow morning bright and early she is off to stay at my mums house for the night and we will pick her up on Saturday morning. I am nervous as she has never been away from us for a night before. My mums house is familiar to her and she knows the family well as we go round almost every week so it's not like she will be somewhere unfamiliar. She will have her crate from home as well as her own blankets and a couple of her toys. My mum works literally across the road at the village primary school so will be home lunch time to check on her, and I found out today my dad is home all day too so won't be on her own - not that she wouldn't cope being on her own but I worry because she's never stayed away from us before. This will be a good introduction to when she goes to stay with my parents when I am on honeymoon. I worry about how well she will get on with my mums yorkie as she is so tiny and Penny can be really rough with her. They will both be shut in their relevant crates when not being supervised and I know my mum won't stand any messing around from Penny - she actually listens to my mum more than me!!! I know that she will be fine, I know. But I do worry.
Re: Penny is having a sleepover! If your mum is anything like my mum was, she will be hugely more competent at looking after a dog than I'll ever be... ;D ;D ;D Mums are great. Penny will be fine.
Re: Penny is having a sleepover! Yeah... Mum said to me, when she first got her dog (her first since my dad's hunting spaniels 22 years ago!) "I've raised three kids; I think I can look after a dog"
Re: Penny is having a sleepover! Sounds like a perfect arrangement for a first sleepover I'm sure it'll go wonderfully well
Re: Penny is having a sleepover! I bet you will miss her more than she misses you Lauren (meant in the nicest possible way of course!) Have a nice time. She IS in good hands.
Re: Penny is having a sleepover! Sure she'll have a ball and it will be good practice for the longer stay at your own wedding. I pack Holly off to granny next week too while we go on holiday. She's practically got her bone and bowl packed and is raring to go, sure extra treats have something to do with that. Enjoy the long lie on Sunday morning!
Re: Penny is having a sleepover! Great trial opp for the big Staycation when you go off on your Honeymoon x Have a lovely time at the wedding and Penny will be fine x
Re: Penny is having a sleepover! Have a lovely time Lauren and don't worry about Penny, Mums cope with far more than dogs xx
Re: Penny is having a sleepover! It's great practise for her, she'll be absolutely fine. Enjoy your day out
Re: Penny is having a sleepover! Enjoy the wedding I'm sure Penny will have lots of fun with your parents x
Re: Penny is having a sleepover! Aw she will be fine. First we had to leave Mira it was for 10 days when she was nearly 5 months. She stayed with friends who are experienced flat-coat owners although don't have a dog at the moment. She apparently showed no signs of pining although she was super-pleased to see us ;D You will miss her more than the other way round, but the reunion will be fab! ;D
Re: Penny is having a sleepover! Well Penny's sleepover seemed to go well. Mum said she paced around for a little while after I left but she settled once she put her in her crate to go to work. She forgot how I showed her to put on her gentle leader for walks so had a good time getting dragged around lol and Penny met a couple of dogs whilst out with mum and did quite well - a 4 month old staffi pup who she had a sniff with then growled a bit as the puppy was quite exuberant so mum just said 'come on then' and pulled her away (she was on the lead) and came away with no fuss, and she also had a nice hello with a cocker spaniel. When mum brought her back on Saturday morning she raced around the house checking everything! First she ran into the front room and had a look at her bed, then went into the kitchen to look at her bed there and her bowls, and then ran around checking all her toys were where she left them! I am a bit worried though as something isn't quite right. I can't put my finger on it though and it could just be the fact that she's settling back in to being home again. Since she came home Saturday morning she really doesn't seem to want to toilet in the garden - she will go out when I take her out to go but then just stands on the path and looks at me waiting to go back inside. If I run up to the other end of the garden and call her she won't come, just stands on the patio looking at me. If I take her collar and guide her onto the grass and tell her to go wee wees she will have a sniff and look like she's about to go and then just try and run back inside. She does this even when I know she really needs to go like first thing in the morning. So far I've had to put her on a lead to take her out and pretty much drag her onto the grass and stand and wait for her to go - last night I was stood in the garden with her for 15 minutes until she went to the toilet. I'm really not sure what it is - is she just settling back in and this is her way of sulking that I left her? I'm wondering if her hips could be playing her up - maybe she doesn't want to squat for the toilet because it hurts? When she ran up the stairs this morning it didn't look quite normal and she slipped with her back end. I can't put my finger on it but something is off.
Re: Penny is having a sleepover! Oh dear Lauren, I hope it's nothing more than the change in routine and she's ok Riley is quite sensitive to changes....if we're staying away or have had house guests(particularly of the doggie variety) he finds the changes odd.
Re: Penny is having a sleepover! Hmm......is she maybe just not wanting you out of her sight and less relaxed if she isn't seeing you?
Re: Penny is having a sleepover! In the last week or so I've noticed she yelps when she's finished having a poo... A bit graphic but it's when it's just come out and she stands up again after.... She's done it today too so I'm wondering if it's related...
Re: Penny is having a sleepover! Hmm....know not a lot about anal glands, but could this be giving her trouble ??
Re: Penny is having a sleepover! I'm glad everything went well at your mums house and out on her walk Might be worth checking in with the vet about her hips, like you said, they could be hurting her??
Re: Penny is having a sleepover! Yeah, I wonder if it would be best to see her physio, or her orthopaedic vet... Might give it a couple of days just to keep a close eye on her and monitor it.... Just seems a bit odd. She's a bit quiet too which would make sense if she's in pain... I've given her some metacam tonight to see if that helps at all - if it does then I'll know I was right
Re: Penny is having a sleepover! I'd see a vet, Lauren, for sure. There is enough there to add up to something to be concerned about. Ok, so not necessarily, but still. Yelping after having a poo alone is pretty unusual.
Re: Penny is having a sleepover! Glad the sleep over went OK..one less thing to worry about! Agree a quick check by the vet, might need a quick Xray to make sure the bowl is OK, probably by the time you get there it will have sorted itself out
