Ok, I've narrowed down my selection to either Pet Plan or Kennel Club for the insurance for my pup who is coming home on Saturday (yay!!!)

I keep hearing great things about Pet Plan - pay up without a fuss, good cover and don't jump up their premiums year on year. I've heard mixed things about Kennel Club but it works out much cheaper over the year for almost identical cover.

Has anyone got KC cover and how have they been? Have they hiked up their premiums?

    Help! Insurance is a minefield!!

    Hi Kate

Does your breeder offer a period of insurance to new owners? If so, which company are they registered with as it could be easier to keep with the same company. I don't know the difference between the two policies but make sure the insurance is a "Covered For Life" policy and check for any specific exclusions in the policy. You need to check the details of the cover from both companies as there is often a difference if they is a difference in the premiums, unless it's a very small difference.

I discovered last week that my French insurance specifically excludes anything which they deem to be hereditary or congenital ie. dysplasia. I had pet plan insurance for my cats while in the UK but never had to make a claim against it.

Good luck with your choice of insurance, or you can do like some and save the money each month against a rainy day need.

Tell us more about your pup. what colour, boy or girl, name- oh and pictures..... Not long to Saturday and your new life of Labrador madness ;D

Both of ours are on Petplan, it's on the expensive side but they've always been excellent.

Obi spaniel came with KC but as Riley was on Petplan we just did a multi dog policy when that ran out.

Holly is our second dog on Petplan. We've never had a problem with them.

Petplan here, with big claims, and they have been great. No quibbles..

One thing though, in between the KC free insurance running out, and the pet plan starting, I took Charlie to the vet for a gunky eye, and pet plan excluded cover for his eyes. So there is a slight advantage in keeping the same insurance from 8 weeks as they can't claim anything was a pre-existing condition.

Next pup, I'll get pet plan from 8 weeks. The KC insurance people really annoyed me with problem over a payment not going through (not my mistake and were so snotty when I tried to sort it out, I switched to pet plan).

I'd say the most important thing about insurance is getting the highest cover possible, and lifetime cover. If something serious happens, the bills can be astronomical.

We have petplan, thankfully not had to use them yet.

My advice is DO NOT mention anything to the vet until after you have insurance, we made that mistake and mentioned a weepy eye and asked about her inverted vulva now anything to do with eyes and her girly bits aren't covered .

Good luck picking your new pup up, you must be very excited :)

I am with the kennel club. I did a lot of comparisons a year ago and plumped for them . We have just had our first renewal it's gone up by £2 to £26 but they have increased annual pay out from 5k to 7.5k so I am more tan happy with that :)
