Hi All, My 2 year old black male is scratching a lot. I am certain he does not have fleas. I have read of dogs being given piriton to ease itchy skin. Does anyone have any experience of this. Thanks for any help. Chris.
Re: Piriton. On buying Piriton for human consumption, I can confirm the sainsburys own brand is exactly the same, and less than half the price of piriton branded packets. Although I CANNOT say it's safe for dog use, I have no idea I'm afraid. Hopefully someone will be along shortly to answer
Re: Piriton. Hi , I have given my terrier Piriton for her allergic reaction to pollens . Unfortunately it wasn't strong enough and she had to have a course of steroids which sorted it out immediately . My Vet did say that for mild itching problems, Piriton was safe, but I would truly advise you to have a word with your Vet as each case is different and so I wouldn't like to say yes or no .

I second the "talk to your vet" call and would add there are other things that could cause itching....being in a very warm central heated house can cause dry skin or wheat intolerance for example. My lab was quite itchy as a youngster....we went onto wheat free food and I would say it improved. People have also reported less than ideal effects of other environmentals such as scented candles and air fresheners. Good luck getting to the bottom of it
Re: Piriton. I have a very itchy dog and vet said I could give him Piriton up to 3 times a day. It does seem to help when he has flare ups with dry, flakey skin, like right now. I also give him 10mls Yumega plus oil, 1000mg evening primrose oil ( 1 capsule) every day and a tsp of coconut oil every other day. His coat is lovely but his skin is prone to dryness and the oils help. Albert is 11 months and has had piriton since 6 months and I get a generic one from my local chemist. Jan
