Hi, I am finding sourcing a complete dog food WITHOUT all the fillers, cereals and whatever else you shouldn't feed your dog a complete nightmare and wondered if anyone could supply a complete list of the no, no ingredients. I am looking for something that won't break the bank either as I have 2 dogs to feed but obviously want to do the best for Hattie & Charlie. They are currently on CSJ Champ on the advice from their nutritionist and they do look good on it especially Charlie as we had real trouble maintaining his weight even on the superior brands but looking into it further it does seem to have a lot of cereals and beet pulp, fillers etc. Just really not sure what to do :-\ Thanks everyone x
Re: Plain and simple please Hi Helen, I changed Harley to Bob and Lush because of her wheat intolerance. I have found it to be brilliant (and cheaper than the RC gastro she was on). It has no wheat or fillers. Not sure if it's in your budget, but worth looking at x
Re: Plain and simple please I am currently using Simpson's Premium 80/20 which comes in at just under £50 for a £12 kg bag. Not sure if this is out your price range, or indeed if you feel going this way is too high in protein to risk on your loony boy. Made no adverse difference to Lilly-pops. I find it very good, and not quite as pricey as the other 80/20s on the market. I actually get it a bit cheaper as I am in a bulk buying team I always find it helpful to check out the All about Dog Food website
Re: Plain and simple please I am looking for a new food as ours has prairie meal in it. This is what I am considering - http://www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk/dog-food-reviews/0296/skinners-field-and-trial-salmon-and-rice It is £28 on Amazon.
Re: Plain and simple please Thanks everyone, I know this has been discussed numerous times but I still think there is confusion, definitely on my part : Thinking about the Skinners also Mags and not a bad price but it does have Oats in it, is that OK?
Re: Plain and simple please Hi Helen , i used to feed CSJ , used it for years but then Sam seemed a bit itchy, nothing too bad but I changed him ( and now Millie too ) onto Skinners Salmon and Rice , it suits them both x
Re: Plain and simple please Looks like Skinners has Beet Pulp in it - is this a problem for Charlie do you think?
Re: Plain and simple please
Looks like Skinners has Beet Pulp in it - is this a problem for Charlie do you think?
Not a clue but even on Burns he couldn't maintain his weight, I am at a loss which way to go as it's mighty confusing Is Beet Pulp a bad ingredient? Thanks Jac x
Re: Plain and simple please Many dogs lose weight on Burns, I could never keep weight on mine when they were on it. I look back over the years with what I fed my dogs, one had half a tin of dog food plus a mixer and she lived to 14 1/2. The next two had oats with dried meat in it and they both lived to 14, the next three had a mixture of dried dog foods and apart from the epileptic one, the other two lived to almost 14 and 14. So I think the foods about these days are fine and Skinners seems quite simple. My one dog is now on Fromm Gold and the other one a frozen block of various meats, maize, carrots and peas.
I'm no expert Helen. Not as far as I know. Just that you mentioned it in your first post. x
It's one of the ingredients in the CSJ, why does it all have to be so difficult Thanks x
Re: Plain and simple please I don't think it is difficult ;D I think we go through fashions in dog food and the internet fuels lots of 'weird' thoughts! I understand that Beet Pulp is a filler. As long as the food has natural antioxidants and the ingredients are well named it should be fine. I understand Simpsons foods seem to be fairly popular.
Re: Plain and simple please Hi Helen If the dogs are doing well on the food I don't think I'd change. I can understand you not wanting to feed cereals and filler but it's obviously not doing them any harm. I feed CSJ command performance 21. It's their premium range so more expensive than the champ but cheaper than most premium brands. Salmon is its first ingredient and the only iffy ingredient when you look it up on all about dog food is corn. I looked into changing because of the corn but apart from really expensive food I haven't found one without some cereal. I think the most important thing is protein being the main ingredient. There are also too many to choose from. :-\ CP 21 also has glucosamine and chrondroitin added. I'd recommend it my two love. PS. On all about dog food it says beet pulp is a good source of fibre so although it could be said to just be a filler it's not a bad one.
Re: Plain and simple please Thanks Jen, even the CSJ premium range seems to have barley, chicken fat, beet pulp and a whole host of other stuff so not sure really, but they do seem fine except Charlie's poos are a bit dry and crumbly (sorry poo description) don't really know what that indicates but he does maintain his weight but then is that because it's got fillers? Skinners does seem to be better with only the beet pulp :-\
Re: Plain and simple please Have you looked on the all about dog food web site. The iffy ingredients, or what they consider iffy, are in red. You can click on all the ingredients and it tells you why they are used etc. you probably know that. : It's so complicated isn't it. Having had a dog with a delicate constitution for 15 years though I'm reluctant to change a food that suits. :-\ PS. The only thing I've just noticed about skinners on the all about dog food is the carbohydrate is the main ingredient. I thought it was best if the protein was the main ingredient although I could easily be wrong. :
Re: Plain and simple please Has anyone heard of or used Markus Muhle NaturNah complete food, it comes out highly rated and not too bad at £32 for 15kg bag with free delivery? It's a German family run business, it is water pressed to lock in the nutrients.
Re: Plain and simple please we started using Markus Muhle about 3 months ago after Molly refused to eat skinners. It was an instant hit and has the added bonus of - how can I put this delicately - I can’t - firm and less smelly poo. Two 15 kg bags for £60 delivered usually next day. Only issue is it is so dense that the quantity required per serving seems quite small after skinners. Paul
Re: Plain and simple please
Thanks everyone, I know this has been discussed numerous times but I still think there is confusion, definitely on my part : Thinking about the Skinners also Mags and not a bad price but it does have Oats in it, is that OK?
They must be good - they are NAKED oats!
Re: Plain and simple please Just had a look at Markus Muhle on the all about dog food where it gets a very good review and I've looked at their website. Where are you ordering from Helen ? I'm quite tempted to try it myself. The price is very good for the quality.
Re: Plain and simple please Jen, not sure if I am going to buy it yet, still got a couple of CSJ left but it's on www.zooplus.co.uk 2 x 15kg bags for £52.90 free delivery. It does look good though, if you get it let me know what you think I am seriously thinking of going raw :-\
