please help me. I have an eleven week old labrador called daisy. She is just so mischevious and beautiful at the same time. The only problem I have is when she gets excited or is playingshe tries to bite. I know she is just a pup but how do iI get her to stop doing this as we have a five year and a baby in the house. Biting with needle-sharp teeth is what puppies do when they play, so it is a totally normal behaviour. Re: please help......biting puppy Hi Kate, and welcome! I, too, have a Daisy puppy. Mine is a yellow and is now 4 months old, and is mostly past the biting phase. Yours will get past it, too, but it can be painful in the meantime! Do check out the info the others mentioned - it's very helpful. Just try to remember it's normal behavior and doesn't mean you have a mean puppy or that she will grow into a dangerous dog! She'll become a sweet teenager of a puppy, and then you'll have all sorts of other problems! ;D

It can seem terrible at times right now but it is just a phase and it will pass. My Penny was a real crocodile when she was a pup and we did an infinite amount of training with her, but to an extent she just grew out of it.

Doesn't it come as a shock when a dog famous for its good and gentle nature, like a Lab, turns out to be a biting machine. It is just a phase they go through. Easy to say, but not easy to hear especially if you have young children. I tried everything to stop Molly, but nothing worked. Then one glorious day, I found myself stroking a lovely soft ear without being nibbled. Sorry I cannot be of more help to you, but one of the greatest strengths of this forum is finding that you are not the only one and as you have seen and will see from the other replies that this is par for the course.
Re: please help......biting puppy Hi and welcome. It's a shock for sure! That lovely bundle of fur has some serious teeth ! I haven't got young children so can't offer you any advice there, but, what worked for me was ignoring Maisie when she was trying to bite, turning away and saying "ouch". It did work and helped to lessen the number of nips I was receiving. Also, rice bones were my saviour, kept her quiet for ages and at 11 weeks they would last for a couple of days. Things will improve....I now have a very gentle 5 month old pup

Re: please help......biting puppy Hello and welcome xx Like some of the others, I was also shocked that the gentle giant I'd hoped for turned out to be a whirlwind of sharp teeth. Our Ash is now 15 weeks old (our first dog) and although he has got a lot better he still bites. He can't seem to help it if he gets over excited so we have to have time-out. Sometimes it isn't practical for us to walk away to another room for a few minutes to ignore him so we tend to put him the other side of a safety gate. I keep repeating every few minutes until he calms. The hardest part is teaching your kids to be nice and calm. My 11 year old still can't understand why he gets repeatedly bitten. He always greets the puppy in a high pitched voice and makes a load of fuss and darts round with toys, squeals, waves his arms & eventually jumps on the sofa saying the dog is going to bite him. He even gets toys out or strokes Ash when the puppy is laying calmly, awake but chilling. Ash thinks he's the most exciting person in the world and now will often go into a frenzy the moment he sees Byron. Rather than working on the dog I'm working on my three kids, trying to make sure they know they are part of the problem for his continued biting. Hope it gets better soon. Hang in there xxxxx
Re: please help......biting puppy Hi there I too just wanted to say welcome. I have a 6 month old bitch and 2 6 year old boys. I found that giving her something else to chew worked and she soon grew out of it. Actually quite quickly she changed from biting to mouthing. I think its hard keeping the kids away from a pup when they are in that phase as they can't help but escalate things. Now mine ask "is Meg calm or bitey " before the approach her. Do read all the links, old threads and articles posted on her. There is some wonderful sensible advice. Enjoy her
Re: please help......biting puppy Hi there and welcome. Like the others say it is just a phase. Mind, puppies teeth are like needles aren't they. Blinking painful when they do catch us. We got meg some virtually indestructible toys and she learnt to bite on them.

Re: please help......biting puppy Hi everyone. I have been overwhelmed by the response and very touched with being made to feel welcome. I am glad to hear it is just a phase. She is such a mischevious yet lovable dog who is due her second jag on Thursday so we all can't wait for our long walks and adventurer's that we are going to have. I would put up a picture of my bundle of joy but Iddon't know how to lol just trying to figure the site out. Xx
