    Hi there,

Please can anyone help me.....we've put a deposit down on our pup to collect in 6 weeks.
We were told she is kc registered and from a really good line of dogs (we have been given the names of some of the ancestors) my question to you is how do we know our pup is from where they say she's from? How can we be sure of the history and that they haven't just found these names on the Internet?
What should we expect regarding the kc document?
I know we should receive the kc document but what does this actually say on it? Will this have all the details of her ancestors and the blood lines?
I'm feeling very anxious and hoping it's all genuine Please any advice would be appreciated xxxx

Hi Amy, if you want to PM me the names of the sire and dam, I can try to look up their pedigrees for you. Some are available for public viewing, depending on how popular they are.

The registration document (if memory serves) simply has the names of the parents and maybe(?) their health scores. But at the time you do the change of ownership, you can request to buy a five-year pedigree certificate from the Kennel Club, too.

Don't worry, the breeder won't be able to register a litter as being from a dam that doesn't belong to her. As far as saying that the puppies are a result of a mating with a particular dog, though - well, some of that has to be on trust, because you weren't there to witness it and, even if you had been, it's possible that they could have introduced another dog, too. But, if it's a good breeder, the you shouldn't worry about this at all.

Are you going to meet the breeder before collecting the puppy? It's normal to go and meet them when the pups are 4-6 weeks old. Then you should get to meet at least the dam and preferably the sire, too, as well as getting a feel for how the puppies are being socialised etc.

Hello, yes we have seen the puppies, met the mum and the dad, just have some worries really. There was something vague about the kc document, and possibility of it not being back on time or something with the microchip number on. Then as well as that, I text or email and don't really get anything back. I Was meant to be emailed a receipt for our deposit but never had it. I've since asked for some recent photos and no reply. But they have replied about other stuff like confirming when the pup will be picked up. Just feeling suspicious now. And even if it is all genuine, I'm beginning to wonder whether this is the breeder I want to buy my pup from. I wanted someone I can keep in touch with and look to for advice if ever we need it. It should be a happy time not filled with doubt as it is now. Thanks for your replies x

Hi Amy, I'd say, if you're feeling like this, then maybe you should walk away.
However, I'd say a couple of things - if you know the pedigree names of the sire and dam, you can look them up on the Kennel Club website. Similarly, the puppies should be registered almost immediately, so you'd be able to look them up, too.
Also, from what I've heard, breeders are notoriously bad at keeping in contact at this stage. They will be very busy with the puppies, which doesn't help you out at this point, obviously. I've also heard people saying that their breeders have been in contact so much more after you take the puppy - when you will be really busy! - because that's when they have the time. Another thing is, plenty of people have talked about advice from their breeders on here, and it's often been pretty poor. Just because a breeder can mate two dog successfully, it doesn't mean they necessarily know how to bring the puppies up to adulthood in the best way, so I wouldn't rely on their advice being gospel.

Have you tried to call rather than email? That may help put your mind at rest.

My spaniels papers weren't back when I picked him up although he wasn't chipped by the breeder back then. However his breeder is very well known and we have mutual friends so I had no concern that the paperwork would be forthcoming. I met mum both times I visited and dad is owned by a friend so I knew him too. The litter was recommended to me by another friend.

If you don't have confidence in the breeder or the setup I would walk away but as Snowbunny says you can check out some things on the KC website.

    Best of luck!

It's a tricky one. On the one hand, it always feels a good idea to "go with your gut" - if you're not happy, walk away. On the other hand, I know for a fact that some of the very best breeders are the worst organisers - terrible at replying to email, terrible at admin, brilliant with dogs.
i would definitely look your pups up on the KC website database, you can track the health checks for their parents and siblings as well, so it is very interesting and useful. Do you need a link to it or have you found it already?

Ok thank you all for your replies, I feel abit better today after getting a response! They have told me the puppies won't be kc reg until 6 weeks old after they have had their microchip.
I will visit again his week and bring up my concerns face to face. Hopefully in 4 weeks time we will have our lovely puppy complete with papers xxx

Who is your breeder? There is an outside chance that someone on this forum might have come across them and could give you a view....
