Cooper is 10 weeks old and he poohs at least five times a day! I feed him dry dog food three times a day (3/4 cup each). Just wonder if this is normal? I think it's wonderful.....but wonder if normal!

Hmmm… it sounds like quite a lot.

10 week old puppies usually are fed four times a day. It could be that his tummy is still too little for three big meals, and he is not digesting it properly yet.

It could also be a sign that the food he is on doesn't quite agree with him - it doesn't always result in diarrhoea.

Lower quality foods will cause dogs to produce more poo as they have more waste products that don't get digested. They also have a lot of fillers like cereals which dogs can't digest properly, therefore producing more poo, and often gas too!

My GSPs always went 4 - 6 times a day, the Labs only go twice. Both Labs are on different diets.

I agree on going back to four meals and maybe slightly less? What food is it? Our pup sometimes goes 4 times, sometimes twice - but the poos are twice as big  lately they've been a bit squishy. Wonder if there's a science of poo studying? I can't help think of that weirdy non doctor who examined poo and who wrote diet books, can't remember her name now.

Having just read the post on pups eating dishwasher tablets and goodness knows what else (which made me smile) I'm going to make a concerted effort to stop fussing (me and the OH are terrible for it, I think we fuss more over the dog than we do our grandchildren). My resolution is to not look at it for 24 hours, if he's eating, running about, drinking - he is most probably fine!

Scout was and still is a good poo'er, I'm sure she can poo whenever and where she wants to.

No need to apologise for the title - as you'll have figured out by now, all lab puppy owners are obsessed by pee and poo! For the first few weeks of owning a puppy, I don't think that my OH and me talked about anything else. I had to keep reminding myself not to discuss it with strangers or they'd look at me funny.

Our Pongo is 23 weeks now and has always had about four poos a day - morning, midday, afternoon, and last thing at night (he doesn't get to go to bed until he has squeezed something out for me ;D ). He has always been on two meals a day, CSJ puppy kibble well-soaked in hot water then allowed to cool so it is really quite mushy. It seems to suit him really well.

I've another observation to throw into the mix - someone has to have done a study!

Weeing: minimal pre wee sniffing required. Need a wee, squat, wee. OK to wee in the same place twice, especially if I've had an accident in the house.
Pooing: huge amount of of pre poo sniffing required. Don't poo in the same place twice. Try pooing on different surfaces; grass, gravel drive, soft earth in flower borders near where the cats poo. Vary this daily. Don't poo until sniffing requirement has been met.

Anyone any idea what's going on?

Turn round in a tightish circle 6 - 10 times, then pee and poo at the same time! My Lab.

No idea what that's about, but I have the same thing. I'm currently on a 'save the lawn' kick for the summer, and whenever possible I'm taking Merla out on a lead and getting her to pee and poo on a small area of gravel. She DOES NOT like it if she poos first (after many sniffy pirouettes, obviously!) and then I insist she pees in the same patch. She has to squeeze herself into the furthest bit of gravel away from where she pooed, even though I've whisked the offending poo away by then. No problem the other way round though!

OK - here is Pongo's personal Manual of Lavatorial Etiquette:

Pee - straightforward operation. Anywhere outside will do. Slight squat, catch the eye of any human within sight (to ensure full credit will be given), have a pee. Dash over (frequently stepping in puddle) to demand payment in the form of treat. If no payment forthcoming, apply the hurt 'what do you mean?' stare until human goes to find treat.

Multiple pee - recently developed technique designed to get more than one treat per bladder-load. Requires delicate bladder control but is highly effective.

Mock pee - worth a shot when bladder empty, even if not usually successful. Squat, catch human's eye, look as though concentrating VERY hard, dash over for treat. Hope human hasn't noticed that there was nothing produced.

Poo - depends on the time of day. During the day, when poo actually required: get outside, sniff in a few likely places, then head onto the lawn and balance very precariously in the deep squat position. Remember to fix any available human with the 'watch me' gaze. Sttrraaaaiiiinnnnn.....just to gain sympathy and extra large treat. Dash over for treat (usually with small amount of poo still not quite finished, just to give human more of a challenge when clearing up....

Poo last thing at night when human really, really wants to get to bed: Slowly allow oneself to be coaxed outside. Sit down. Look around. Sniff the air. Lie down. Sit up again. Ignore human. Sniff the air again. Get up, wander around a few likely spots, reject them all. Look for peanuts under the bird feeder. Pretend to find one and waste a few minutes chasing it. Wander around again. Tease human by walking over to grass then walking away again. Sit down. Once human is at screaming point (or soaking wet, if raining), slowly mosey on up to the grass, assume the deep squat position and do the necessary. Dash down for very large treat from grateful human and get back inside.

I think we should compile a Wee & Poo chapter for Pippa's next book

Rosie, I'm giggling away to myself. All you need is a cartoon illustrator and you'd have a best-seller for sure!

If you find an illustrator, let me know, I think us Mods might like to borrow one ;)

Charlie has a variation on the mock pee last thing at night:

Glare at human to make sure he is being observed, dash deep into bush, rustle leaves, dash out to demand treat - then employ maximum distraction techniques in the form of treat demands in order to stop human crawling under bush to check suspiciously dry leaves...

Delighted to know it is not just Pongo!
Whoever thought that dogs could lie so bare-facedly? (And with such innocent eyes?)

Loving the pee & poo stories.
Don't remember Mira doing 5 a day when she was a wee pup - does seem a lot.

She is expert in the mobile poo. If a poo is taking longer than she thinks it should and is interfering with garden exploration, she just squat-walks off leaving a trail behind her
This can apply to pees too if they exceed the alloted time ::)
    She has no patience!

OMG....these stories are so darn funny! And so like Cooper...specially the last potty break of the night when it is raining and you want to get him to his crate and you to bed! The circling.....the "non-pee" but want my treat!.....all of this is so familiar! As to the amount of poo Cooper does, talked to a trainer yesterday and she said the food I'm giving him (Purina Pro-Plan that the breeder was also feeding him) is low quality and full of filler and I should change to a more quality kibble which is what I'm doing today....still mixing in the new with the "old" so it wont upset his stomach. You all made me laugh with your stories....Iam SO GLAD we have this forum!!! We are all in the same boat so it is great to share.
Again, and as always, THANK YOU!
