Our lab, Roxy, does a couple of poos a day. One is usually fine, but the other is frequently prolonged with 3 or 4 go's in different places. This starts off normally but ends quite loose with quite a bit of straining. Does anyone know what causes this? She's 7m old, good shape (3 on the chart), otherwise well and quite lively. I had heard this could be due to over-feeding, but she has pretty much the recommended amount. Some kibble, a Kong with a biscuit and a raw-hide chew are typical. She has been to the vet and doesn't have any problems. Thanks.
Hmm....some dogs don' do well with raw hide. Maybe just feed kibble for a few weeks, using soaked kibble on the Kong too (frozen) and try without both the raw hide and biscuit. That would be a good starting point.
Yep, agree with this, when Cassie was your puppy's age raw hide made her do huge poo's, as she got older it seemed to affect her less. Now she's nearly 2 though she hardly ever has one
I find that Rourke does a super poo in the morning, but the afternoon one is more like toothpaste. Several dogs I know are like this, so I thought it was just normal!
Rawhide doesn’t agree with my girl either. Worth a try not giving it to her for a week and see if that mama difference. It won’t have an immediate affect but you should see a difference after a few days.
Thanks for those replies. I'll give the rawhide a miss for a week and see how we do. Do you give any other chew? Roxy may start on the furniture otherwise...
My lab did huge poos but then again he used to eat other dog's poo as well. I have switched him over to raw food and his stool is so much better. Thinking about trying the Anco roots as well. I only give a maximum of two beef hides a week. The frozen kongs are great, I mix it up a bit and put a little bit of either banana, apple, cream cheese or peanut butter in with moist kibble. Keeps him busy for nearly an hour :-D
Might be dehydration. Raw hides are very dry. Perhaps encourage drinking after eating a raw hide? Although I personally would steer clear of raw hides. I believe a lot of chemicals are needed to process them, including bleach to make them the creamy color. How about a raw meaty (non-weight-bearing) bone? Agree with above re raw diet - poos are generally much smaller and harder, and easier to pick up!
