Casper has been slowing down for a while..and it has got very noticeable over Christmas. He just hasn't been himself, and I think trying to hide the fact. He has a diagnosis of AS (ankylosing spondylitis) where the vertebrae of the lower spine has developed bony growths called osteocytes, and these are causing discomfort, although not too serious yet according to the last Xrays. Casper also has mild HD, worse in one hip than the other. He has had a period of painkillers, as he was doing so well, and our super vet didn't want him on them longer at this point as going forward he will need them permanently. He is on yumove advance and this really has made a difference. Anyhow last night, for the first time he really growled at me, I felt so upset for him. Lots of lick lipping, and clearly upset. He was just lying on the sofa, as usual, and apart from a head stroke I don't usually disturb him unless he makes it clear he wants to interact. I think it will be back on the anti imflammatories, I just hope there is nothing else wrong. Due back at our vet who specialises in orthopaedic conditions on Friday. May have to go sooner but she is always so booked up I would rather wait to see her. Sofa day methinks for Casper....
So sorry to hear this, Kate. He's such a lovely dog and it must be heart-wrenching to see him in pain. Big hugs to you all.
So sorry to hear about poor Casper not being so comfy. He's a lucky boy though, to have to care for him and look after him. He couldn't be in a better place. And you know, getting aches and pains as we get older happens to us all, including it making us very grumpy at times. It's so difficult with animals, you just don't know how they feel.
Oh poor Casper, he must be really suffering if he grumbled at you . Hopefully the vet will be able to help on Friday, like you I would keep him quiet and rested until then
Sorry to read about poor Caspar, I hate to see an animal in pain. My German Pointer had this but seemed to cope well, hope the same can be for Caspar after treatment.
He is better today..although he seems to prefer his bed on the floor and not the sofa. Will buy him the biggest, deepest memory foam bed for him
My old dog Billy had AS too, but he was ok with painkillers. Poor old Casper, my sympathies. I am sure that the anti-inflammatories will make a big difference.
Just wanted to add - Billy was so bad that he was actually paralysed for a few days, and I spent one Christmas sleeping on the couch with him, thinking I was going to have to have him put to sleep... The anti-inflammatories changed things so much for the better, and he lived for nearly another three years, so don't be too worried.
Poor man.... He's in good hands though. My old doggie, Nicolae, had this too and did well on metacam when he needed it.
Poor lovely Casper, keeping everything crossed for him to be pain free. xxx How is Casper today Kate? x
Harley sends Casper lots of licks I hope your get is able to make him a bit more comfortable. If you need anything or any help give me a shout x
