We have just started Millie on a course of prednisolone which are steriods, for her itchiness . The steroid shot she had recently worked like a charm but within a week or so, the effects wore off and she is suffering again . I cant say that she is really bad , but we have balanced up the effectiveness of the mediaction with any risks involved , just cant see her scratching and fed up , hoping they kick in very soon . We now wonder if maybe this is one of the reasons she was dumped and unwanted, if so, shame on those who werent prepared to do something to help her xx
Re: Poor little soul I hope she gets some good relief now. We have used cortisone on one of our dogs before for an very extended time and had no trouble. It was much better for him to have the meds and get rid of the constant itching and resulting infections etc. good luck.
Re: Poor little soul Poor little mite. Or perhaps that's not a great name for her, under the circumstances. Hope she is feeling better now after the steroids.
Re: Poor little soul Thank you , she is currently fast asleep , the steroids seem to have knocked her for six, mind you, if I said the magic words " Sea Biscuit " I bet she would be up in a flash
Re: Poor little soul Poor Millie. Hope the steroids kick in quickly. Lots of hugs from me and woofs from meg.
Re: Poor little soul Hope they bring Millie relief. My last Lab had them on and off for most of his life for itchy skin and we found them very effective. I gradually discovered the lowest dose that worked for him and was always able to give less than prescribed. Do hope you find the steroids helpful.
Re: Poor little soul Poor millie, barley sends sympathy licks to her as he knows what it feels like, and i send sympathy hugs to you as i know what it is like to deal with. Hope she feels more comfortable soon
Re: Poor little soul Prednisolone tablets have been like a miracle cure for Obi so I really hope Millie finds the same. Like you, we really wanted to knock the itch on the head fast. The vet said it was really important to medicate properly before they get to the point where they are breaking skin, because not only it is torture for the dog then you are also looking at antibiotics (infection sets in easily because the skin's ability to fight back is already compromised). Our vet said that we might find that Obi drank more and urinated more frequently on the steroids at first. We did find that that was the case when he was on a daily dose but he went back to normal when on the 'every second day' dose.
Re: Poor little soul Yes, breaking the itch-scratch cycle as quickly as possible is really important both for poor Millie's welfare and also to prevent chronic changes happening to the skin which in some cases are irreversible. Good decision for Millie, hope she feels better soon.
Re: Poor little soul Hope the Pred has kicked in. Itching is awful. Even one little insect bite drives me nuts. Poor little dog, bet she doesn't know what to do with herself.
Re: Poor little soul Thank you for the get well wishes for our little scrap, much appreciated She did have a small bald spot on her side, the hair began to grow back after the steroid shot, but then when the effects wore off , she scratched the hair off again . It is slowly growing back now thank goodness, it looks a little sore but the Vet doesnt see the need for antibiotics at the moment . I took them both to the beach early this morning, she has had a swim in the sea so hopefully this will aid the healing process, now have two tired dogs and a soaking wet me, as usual
Re: Poor little soul Hardly a scratch today her dose is one per day for four days, then one every other day for a week , then half of one every other day for a week , its a case of hoping that the low dose will do the trick for the summer , bless her, she so deserves to be happy , little tail never stops wagging
