Got a poorly pup this morning. Excessive drooling, extremely lethargic, refusing to eat. No swelling or pain to the tummy, he had a poo on his last walk yesterday evening, no vomiting. Vet opens at 8am. Been debating whether to call the emergency number but only an hour until they open. I don't think it's the heat - it wasn't that hot here yesterday, and anyway he missed his afternoon walk (I was busy) and just played in his paddling pool instead. Ah, such a worry.
Re: Poorly Charlie Poor old you and Charlie. Just when you think the road ahead is clear. If he was a child I'd have said "Tonsilitus", that's what it sounds like in a child and that's what mine did to me every time (holiday, days out, parties etc) Hope the Vet sorts him out quickly and you can go back to enjoying your holiday
Re: Poorly Charlie Ah Julie.....nightmare....I'd have said heat straight away but it sounds unlikely. I think with the time frame ,if you rang I bet they would say to you just bring him in at 8 anyway..... Will he take a drink? Let's know how you get on,I hate them being ill because they can't tell you .
Re: Poorly Charlie I did call the emergency number - as slightly getting beside myself here - they said just to wait until 8 - the emergency number directed me to the animal hospital and I spoke to a vet. 40 minutes to wait for the vet... Gosh, he seems poorly.
Re: Poorly Charlie Awwwwww poor Charlie. I hope it's nothing too bad! Let us know how you get on at the vet... I expect you're there right now actually.
Re: Poorly Charlie I was stood outside the vet's at 7.45 as they unlocked - to be fair, even though I tried to get the vet at the animal hospital to say I could go there, I wouldn't have got to the animal hospital any earlier, maybe 5 minutes earlier. He has chemical burns to the roof of his mouth and tongue. Likely cause, a battery. Had he swallowed it? If so, it's a full out emergency surgery. OH goes to check furiously around the house. Found a pack of 4 batteries, pilfered from OH's study, with one chewed. OH back to vet with battery - two small holes in the battery, but looks like the amount of liquid that would have been released is not a lot. Surgery called off, Charlie on an IV to get (extraordinarily expensive) anti-ulcer drugs into him in case he develops ulcers in his throat or tummy which could be very serious. Tramadol for pain relief, anti-ulcer drugs for two weeks, and sensitivity control food in wet form. He managed to eat his wet food breakfast, slowly, and take the tramadol. God. This dog is going to give me a heart attack one of these days..... :-\
Re: Poorly Charlie Oh goodness me what a morning you have had. So pleased that Charlie doesn't need surgery and hope he is feeling better soon. I'm off to check we have no batteries within reach. Did they give you any idea how long he has to be on the IV? Alice
Re: Poorly Charlie Gosh Julie how awful poor Charlie. :'( Thankfully you got him to the vet ASAP . Thank goodness you found the batteries and all accounted for. Presumably they would've xrayed before opening him up though. I bet you thought what I do when my two do something that can make them ill ' WHY, WHY, WHY ' . Fingers crossed the meds work quick and no ulcers or any more problems. It's a good sign he ate the wet food. Will be thinking of you. :-\
Re: Poorly Charlie Thanks both, Alice, he is home - the IV drug was quick to administer. It just took about 10 minutes. I didn't see them do it, as they took him away but said he was super good about it. He is snoozing on the sofa now, seemingly a bit more comfy. I guess the tramadol is kicking in. I'll see whether he wants a walk down the road later for a poo. Don't know whether he can go on holiday next week. The vet said it just depends how he is - he might recover and pick up quickly, or might be poorly for a while. Ah, life with a dog...
Re: Poorly Charlie Oh heck, what next, poor you and Charlie too , so pleased that you got him in so quickly, get well soon lovely boy xx
Re: Poorly Charlie Anyone would think it was my dog as I had sweaty palms and elevated heart rate reading about Charlie, dogs are such a worry. Lets hope that when he felt the first burn he stopped chewing immediately, it does sound as if nothing went down. Going on his gundog holiday next week might cheer him up and help him forget any residual pain, I do hope he is well enough by then.
Re: Poorly Charlie Oh my goodness! Good job you got him to the vets quickly! I hope he starts to feel better soon!
Re: Poorly Charlie Ah blasted internet! Can't believe I missed this! Poor Charlie, I'd have been beside myself too. So glad he's on the mend, I was racing through the thread hoping for good news.....hope he feels much, much better soon x
