My boy has been sick ......twice ...... :'( he's only ever been sick once before and I knew what it was straight away ....not sure of the cause this time..... I got back from the UK yesterday with half of PAH in my case and I bought a couple of rubber chicken flavored chew rings ....the smaller smelt revolting and within a few minutes he'd chewed a bit off so I chucked it.I gave him the bigger one today,he had a little play with it but it reeked and when he lost interest I threw that too,I wonder could the flavoring have upset him? What he's sicked up has been yellow and frothy and had a bit of the chew from yesterday in it.....he ate a bit of grass in the park this morning.Hes drunk plenty today and there was no problem at breakfast ,but where he would religiously be mythering for his 6 pm walk now he is alternating with lying on my feet and getting back up on the couch next to me :'( he's not interested in a walk at all...unheard of :-\ I've cooked him some rice which is what I usually feed if he's got diarrhea but should I starve after a vomiting episode?he's not looking for food ( again ,unheard of!)but then he's out of his routine ( walk then dinner :) I'm so careful with him in the heat .....but I did have a 10 minute play late morning in the garden with him as I'd set up his agility hoop and it's one of those that needs to get stuck in the grass......there's been thick cloud cover today so I thought it would be ok,he had a drink as soon as he came in,I hope I haven't made him ill through my impatience :-[ :'( I did his avantix treatment today too but that never makes him sick ??? I'll watch him tonight and see how he does......
Re: Poorly What a shame Angela. I guess it could be all of the above combined. The excitement of having you home. Hope he is feeling better later poor boy
Re: Poorly Poor boy. Edsel sends his wishes for speedy recovery! Tummy troubles are no fun. Lori & Edsel
Re: Poorly Sorry to hear Dexter is poorly Angela. The main thing is that he drinks. It probably wouldn't hurt to starve him. On the rare occasions meg is sick I starve her for the day but make sure she drinks. They really do worry us don't they? If he doesn't want to eat I shouldn't worry. See how he is morning and if you're still concerned maybe vet. Silly remark that one cos I know that's what you would do anyway. Get well Dexter.
Re: Poorly Ah thanks ,he's very sorry for himself.....not my feisty boy at all, although he was up and at my BIL a little while ago as usual. Forgot to mention one of the up chucks was on his new bed ??? ....he got off his old tatty sofa throw to go and do the deed on his new bed!Dexter! I know Jen,Chris is in the UK and is disbelieving that I'm not at the vet already.... : I'll see how he goes and be straight there tomorrow if he's not right x
Re: Poorly Sorry to hear this. There are quite a few reasons there though that might explain things. I hope he picks up soon.
Re: Poorly My old vet (the really nice one) always told me starve for vomiting but you can feed for diarrhea. It sounds like he just vomited bile. If it had a bit of the chew in it he could well have been getting rid of it. Dogs are good at doing that. :. When scout ate a chunk of plastic he vomited bile and the plastic. Hope Dex feels better very soon Angela.
Re: Poorly He's been sick again twice since I originally posted, just this frothy yellow bile ..... He wouldn't have a drink so I took him round the block and he had a poo that had some really hard orange plastic bits in it...not the chew I gave him yesterday it's as if he's crunched up a toothbrush handle but as far as I know he hasn't....he hasn't been out of my sight since I got back, his sitter would have told me if he'd eaten anything untoward.....which to be honest he isn't in the habit of doing.I can't check as she is in the air on a flight. The good ole internet says frothy yellow vomit can be bile due to an empty stomach...so I've given him some mushy rice swimming in water as 1. That will give him something in his tummy,2. it will hopefully cushion and push through anything that is on the move through him and 3. If there's a blockage,I guess he's going to be sick again pretty quickly and I'll be straight down to the emergency vet..... Aaaaagggh home alone too .....I'd hate him sick anytime but especially when I haven't got another pair of eyes here :-\ I'll sleep downstairs with him tonight x Just reminding myself of Tatze eating all the leads and harnesses, all Simba's exploits and Hugo ate a golf ball, not to mention Lady surviving a tennis ball snack......all will be well!
Re: Poorly Oh Jen,I'd fed him before I saw your post :-[ it was literally a palm full of mushy rice and loads of water.....
Re: Poorly Oh, poor Dex :'( Hopefully it will sort itself out soon, fingers crossed. And to be honest I think the difference between having a small bit of rice and starving is minimal. All best wishes and hugs to you both. Did you enjoy your trip home? I thought of you when I booked that holiday home in Tockwith I used at Christmas for the week of next year's Gamefair at Harewood (nothing like getting organised in advance!).
Re: Poorly When my dogs have been sick bile it's been because they have eaten something they shouldn't. :-\. It usually happens on an empty stomach which with my two only happens at night. My theory and I stress it is only my theory, whatever they've eaten that hasn't digested has remained in the stomach so they continue to produce bile to try and digest it. When scout ate the plastic he was sick a large piece of it with bile and smaller pieces passed out the other way. Once he'd got rid of it the bile stopped. Giving him rice I think is a good idea. Like you said it will hopefully stop the bile and get things moving if there is anything left to move. Scott had a squeaker in his tummy for two and a half weeks. :. He was fine I'm sure Dex will be.
Re: Poorly Poor you and all alone, it is such a worry, but I am sure he will be fine. If you are very worried you can always phone the vet for advice, I never let things go on very long! Dogs are surprisingly resilient.
Re: Poorly If he's produced some hard plastic bits then it sounds like things are moving through. A handful of mushy rice will be fine, if he is still keen to eat and quite bright it's unlikely he's got a total obstruction so I'm sure you've done the right thing. A sleepless night downstairs for you whilst Dex snores gently all night I reckon. Hope he's better in the morning.
Re: Poorly Sounds like you know what you are doing and I hope it doesn't come to the vet. I suppose you could always talk to them on the phone. Hope you both sleep well
