    Hi
Just after a little moan really and to share my nerves..
Poppy is just a year old and due to be spayed tomorrow, Im feeling very nervous is it the right thing to do, how will she be. how on earth will I stop her jumping about after the op???? Poppy is a rescue pup so I had to sign to say I would get her spayed at a suitable time, my vet wouldn't do it until she had her first season which was in July so now the time has come Im in two minds whether to cancel or go ahead, any advice words of wisdom would be greatly received...
    Thanks
    Lois

Hello Lois , lovely to hear from you :)
I`m in a similar situation , my rescue terrier Millie is being spayed on 3rd January, so i know how you feel and share you worries too .
For me , it was an easy decison , Millie was coming out of a phantom pregnancy when we had her , I didnt realise that this was what it was, but I do now . She is two months post season and is suffering another phantom, its distressing to see her miserable and confused, not something I want her to ever go through again .
I have chosen to have most of my dogs neutered , some people prefer not to , its personal choice I guess but like me , you have a rescue and have no choice . Try not to worry too much ( says she who is already worrying ) you signed a contract so you may as well get it all over and done with . Anaesthetics are not so heavy these days , most owners will tell you the same, that the biggest hurdle is trying to keep them calm afterwards , they do tend to recover quickly , keep your chin up :)

Lois I've got a13 month old boy that has just been neutered,he's our first dog,I wrang myself out about it as it felt so mean to us and there were no behaviours that were signaling it was necessary apart from a quite dangerous lunge for a beagle on heat in the park one time......that's now a funny story amongst our friends but it wasn't at the time!
Dexter needed an operation on his tail only a couple of weeks ago so as he was having an anesthetic anyway we made the decision to neuter him at the same time.....the tail recovery overshadowed the castration recovery and it's only now that I am observing how he is and he is the same lovely, friendly, energetic ,fiesty fella he was before ;D
We picked him up at the vets and he was a nutter ....due to the fact he was starving ,you would never have thought he'd had an op .....the surgery was really busy and he was skidding all over the place,I was in bits at the time but there was no harm done ,thank goodness ..I fed him at home and he settled down straight away,he's not a big jumper so I didn't have that to manage that.as he had had a tail operation and could reach that wound site even with the biggest ecollar on I was sleeping with him which I think calmed him as he sleeps downstairs not with us.....
Let us know now she is....big hug to you x

I have had five bitches spayed over the last thirty years and all have been well. I can understand how you feel though, have just had my Lab castrated and was very worried, but he was fine, like Dexter he was starving afterwards so had a good meal and settled well.

Re the keeping them on the lead and not jumping up; you will survive! I used to walk with a vet and she let her bitch off the lead three days after the op!!!! I wouldn't do that though! It is worrying and tiring keeping them on the lead, but little and often lead walks and some brain training in the house and taking them out in the car for a change of scene and before you know it the time has passed and all will be well.

Good Luck, will be thinking of you.

    Hi Lois,
Bess was spayed this year and it was all very straightforward. It was quite hard walking her on the lead and keeping her calm for the prescribed ten days but it was easier than when she was in season. If you go ahead this time tomorrow the worst will be over and a sleepy Poppy will be home. Good luck.

I'm sure she will be totally fine :) It's a routine op and I'm sure she'll recover surprisingly quickly.

Where I live (Australia) it is the norm to have male and female dogs neutered - and for bitches this means before the first season. It'd be very hard to find a vet that would recommend waiting to let a bitch have a season first. Anyone who expressed an interest in waiting would find themselves faced with an argument against waiting. Anyway, I just find the different norms interesting.

Dropped Poppy off at 8.30 this morning she didn't even give me a backward glance...and has been a right little madam this morning as if she knew something was up!! Now just have to wait for 2pm to see how its all gone, my next problem is keeping a jumpy mad dog quiet for at least a week...cant wait....NOT!!!

Hi Lois. I hope all goes well. My dog Lady was spayed when she was about 10 months old. She looked a complete wreck after the op and I felt awful about it, but she was as right as rain within 48 hours and as you say stopping a young Lab from running and jumping was not easy. They are very resilient and all should be well quite quickly.

I knew she was getting better the next day, by the way, when she ate a tennis ball so we had to rush her back to the vets! ;D

Hey Lois, she will be fine for sure.....the 10 days( which crept into 25 days ??? For us) lead walking did our performance on lead a world of good.... We look fairly presentable now ,all be it with plenty of management :D ,let is know how she is when you pick her up x
