So Cleo got spayed on Friday and is recovering nicely. I'm a mess, but she's doing well! Lol. Did anyone else notice post spay more panting after bathroom trips outside? I'm taking her out on a lead always and we do not go too far but my little lady is a little finicky and has specific places she's likes to go. So she rushes there. Not quite a run but not a slow walk. So I'm thinking the post bathroom trip panting is because of the rush to the spot and the fact that she is recovering. I plan on asking the vet when he calls tomorrow to check up on her but figured I'd ask now. I also haven't used a cone. I've been with her the whole time since the surgery and have slept next to her on the couch. She has licked around her back half a bit but not the stitches really (she has extra skin from a c-section that actually hides the incision unless she's stretched out on her back. I'm going back to work on Tuesday and don't think I need to use a cone since she's been good with it. The vet said its really excessive licking that is a problem and she's not doing that. Just wanted to see if anyone had an opinion on not using a cone come Tuesday. As always any and all advice is appreciated!
I can't help re the panting, but do have experience on not using a cone as Harley hated it. She was really good with not licking her wound after surgery and when I went back to work after 5 days I left her without a cone and had no problems. If Cleo hasn't shown any interest in the wound so far you should be ok. If you think she might have a lick you could put something over the wound like a t-shirt or something. Hope she continues to heal quickly.
Tatze, Twiglet and Gypsy didn't need cones at all. I agree that excessive licking would require one. These three didn't bother with the wound at all, thankfully. ...
I'm not sure about the panting. However Jessie didn't have a cone, the vet said they didn't bother with them unless they were licking the wound a lot. She was absolutely fine without one when left. Hope she recovers soon. It is amazing how quickly the bounce back!
Thanks all. I think the panting is from discomfort. She keeps shifting around and went back to a healed hot spot she has. I talked to the vet and he said since she's responsive and eating then it's probably just her body recovering and nothing wrong per say. I can't wait for the stitches to be out and my little girl to be all healed up! I hate seeing her being uncomfortable.
When my old dogs was in pain he panted. I pant when I'm in severe pain, I think you're right her lady bits hurt and her muscles are sore
My understanding of panting in dogs is due to pain/discomfort or distress of some sort. Has she has any analgesia prescribed? Wonder if that help. I would be tempted to have the vet give her a quick once over. Check for her temp, wound area etc...just for peace of mind. Hope Cleo (and you...) feel a bit more comfy soon
When I have had my bitches spayed, they have been raring to go the next day. If Cleo is panting and it isn't due to heat, then I would take her to the vet. Did she not have a 3 day check up which is normally done and is included in the cost of the spay. I agree with all @Beanwood suggests.
