Is it normal for a bitch to be producing milk? I noticed this morning on our daily inspection that puzzle is producing milk from her teats
Re: Producing milk I thought that at first but it has been 12 weeks since the end of her season, i thought that they occurred around 8 weeks after their season had finished. She is behaving normal in every other way, no nest making or treating toys like puppies
Re: Producing milk No, 12 weeks is about right. Caddie had them after every season, and the symptoms got gradually worse. Might be worth talking to your vet about, there is a link between phantom pregnancies and developing pyometra at some later stage. I had Caddie spayed and just caught it in time. I wouldn't check her teats too much, that might stimulate even more milk production. The vet can prescribe something called galastop which will dry up the milk in a couple of days.
Re: Producing milk Phantom pregnancy for sure. I'd be inclined to take her to the vet. My first puppy ended up an antibiotics for 3 months when it happened to her as she got a bad infection out of it. Prevention is better than cure.
Re: Producing milk Millie also had a phantom, producing milk too, she needed Galastop to help her and a spay as soon as the milk stopped as there is some tendancy to have another phantom , Millies started at around 11 weeks after the end of her season .

Re: Producing milk sorry about the late reply, been very busy. We ended up taking her to the vets as she is our first ever puppy and first bitch so we have no idea about these things. She did not want to give her galastop unless it was absolutely necessary but gave no indication as that what the requirements for that were. She also said that it is very rare for them to develop mastitis. In dads words it was a waste of money and what she told us the vet nurse could have told us on the phone and saved us £28 for the vet consult
Re: Producing milk Glad she seems ok.. Did the vet think it was a phantom pregnancy? Sometimes we only find out that we didn't need the vet after we consult the vet - but it works the other way round too... Best to be on the safe side, I think
Re: Producing milk I'm no vet but have first hand experience of what mastitis can do and what it can develop into. However, After looking at you latest videos and pictures it was evident but not in a serious way. Puzzle seams to have got by it on her ow thankfully. Just keep an eye out for it on her next season. Keep up the good work your doing on the training. Such a shame you did not get more positive replies on your training thread, guess people are just jealous
Re: Producing milk Sorry the vet was not more helpful. The receptionist would not be allowed to advise you unfortunately. Puzzle may need to be spayed as false pregnancies can lead to pyometra later. I did comment on training post and am very impressed with what you have achieved with Puzzle. Have you had any gundog lessons? If not I think you would really enjoy them and taking Puzzle even further, you both look talented to me ;D

Yes that vet did talk to us about this, we are aiming to get her done after her 3rd season if we get her done as we have not decided if we are going to breed her yet. No we have not had any gundog lessons as yet but are planning to go to some soon. She had a go at a scrurry today with 1lb dummy's she was very good and had no trouble holding them. She was a bit stuck on the hidden one (one was thrown in so she could see it) but with some help she found it. [/quote] yes she is a bit saggy, but she was like that before as well, it is just a bit more noticeable to other people as they do not see her every day like us.

Where it's generally not the norm to be negative about others. I missed Annabelle's post, as it seems others did. If you see an interesting post with a disappointing number of replies, the nicest thing to do is "bump" it so it reappears on the index page.
