Hi all, New puppy owner here! We're the proud owners of a gorgeous 9 week old chocolate lab puppy. We're trying to get our habits right from the very start and have a query...In the first days at home article, Pippa mentions that you should never call the puppy by his name unless he is bounding towards you...does this extend to in general use, or is it ok to use his name on other occasions as well as when he is rushing towards us? Thanks all!
Re: Pup learning name Hi and welcome from me and Charlie! I don't know the official answer to this but I find it pretty much impossible not to use my puppy's name at other times...in fact for most of this week I have kept calling my youngest son Charlie too! Surprisingly he suits the name!
Re: Pup learning name Hello there, and welcome. That bit in the article is in the context of recall - if you want your recall signal to be your puppy's name then never use it unless he is running towards you (this is because you are trying to associate the act of running towards you with the sound of his name). I think for a family pet the dog's name as a recall signal is a bit impractical, so perhaps best choose another signal "come" for example.
