Hello All, Firstly ,Sorry I have been asking too many questions lately . We have a 5 months old Lab who jumps onto the sofa now by himself . I have read that puppies going up and down the stairs can be bad for their hips . He doesn't do it often , Just couple of times a day . If possible i make sure i carry him down or let him up . The reason for him going there is his elder rescue brother loves sitting there when we are in the living room watching TV etc . I usually sit on the floor to play with the little fellow but after sometime hes done playing and goes straight up the sofa . Also i have another worry , when i take him for his daily walks he pulls and now i am not using the harness on him so he gags sometimes cause of the collar . he gets a fair share of off-leash time , But to get the off-leash area I need to walk a little , and this is when the pulling starts . Now even the adult dog is pulling looking at the smaller fellow , they just want to sniff the whole world Please Advise Cheers Vish
Re: Puppy Jumping up the Sofa How Bad i sit ?? Jumping up onto the sofa is not a problem as it's a soft landing. As long as he is not taking repeated flying leaps off the sofa I don't think that jumping down is a problem either. The thing to avoid below a year is repetitive jumping of the kind that would happen in dog sports like Flyball or Agility. Dogs are usually not allowed to start training in those sports till they reach one year. But I really wouldn't worry about getting on and off the furniture With the pulling, have a read of these articles: http://www.thelabradorsite.com/how-to-stop-your-labrador-pulling-on-the-lead/ http://www.thelabradorsite.com/my-labrador-still-wont-stop-pulling There is no magic bullet. The keys are: - never allow your dog to pull you a single step - stop and wait for the lead to slacken or change direction - mark and reward (as often as it takes) for walking in a nice, non-pulling, position While you are re-training nice, loose lead walking, you don't want to give him opportunities to pull you along. If that means walking up and down your street while you change direction 100 times then that's how it may be for a while. It will just take time and patience and persistence from you. I let my dog sniff but he is only allowed to get to what he can reach without making the lead go tight. Otherwise I do not budge. It does take a lot of vigilance, but it works in the end.
Re: Puppy Jumping up the Sofa How Bad i sit ?? Thank you Racheal for the quick response , Will get on to working on the pulling part right away after work. Cheers Vish
