Hi All, Macy is 3 months old and pees from excitement when company comes to our house. She does this even if she just relieved herself minutes before. Does anyone have experience, will she likely grow out of this? Or will it likely be an on-going issue? Thanks,
Aww bless her! She is still very young, barely able to control her bladder without any stimulus, so add exciting visitors and you are asking the impossible. You could start by rewarding her for being calm when visitors arrive, encourage your guests not to fuss the puppy when they enter your home. Being calm when guests arrive is a good behaviour to start working on...but bear in mind it is very difficult for a pup to manage impulse control at such a young age.
She will likely grow out of it. As @Beanwood says it's her inability to control her little self coupled with excitement that does this. Our Jet still did this a few times at one year old, when especially exciting people like Grandma visited. Our rescued ESS did this when we first got her at four years old but then it was more likely submissive pee from worry as she'd had a tough life before us getting her.
Sam never did this but my last Lab girlie did , little squirts of pee when excited , as said before, it will right itself with maturity x
The first lab (cross) I had as a child did this right into old age. However, we, as a family, didn't have a clue about training in those days (late 60s/70s) so just accepted it. But the advice given regarding rewarding for calm sounds like good advice if she doesn't grow out of it.
My niece's Springer used to do this. He grew out of it at about 2 years old. They got people to greet him outside until then ...
Harley has only done this once that we have noticed. My friend, who spent a lot of time with her as a little pup, was away and came to visit. I think it was a combination of just waking up and having a semi full bladder and super excitement to see my friend.
She's now about 4 months old and still pees herself. In fact, she does this even for me sometimes when I get home from work. I can't tell if it's from excitement or submissive. Do you think this could become a learned behavior? Anything I should avoid or try different?
A tip for curbing excitement when you get home, or leave, is to ignore her for 10 minutes. Don't look at her, talk to her, pet her, nothing. Make it a non-event and your comings and goings will soon become nothing for her to pee about because she won't be excited. I found it was bit disappointing for me to not receive a wild, happy greeting on arriving home but it was better for the dog.
Our springer Max did this all his life, all 13.5 years I expect your little one will get better control as she gets older, good luck.
Oh, I love my body-wags from Squidge, lip-curling smile from Willow and just huge excitement to see me from Shadow. I just said to my husband yesterday how glad I am that none of them have done excitement wees, because it would make me sad if I couldn't have such a wonderful greeting. We did enough to stop jumping up, but positively encourage the rest Yes, we're bad puppy parents!
I'm the same - worked on no jumping but lucky there have never been excitement wees as there is nothing better than the welcome home I get from Bailey
Xena did this until a couple of months ago. She's almost 1. You've potentially got a lot of excitement widdling ahead of you but don't fret, it's completely normal
Thanks for all the input - very very helpful. I've done a bit of reading and it sounds like there is a difference between excited peeing and submissive peeing. I've had to scold her a few times lately for jumping and biting the children. I'm afraid it could have crossed the line into submissive peeing as she does cower when she does this. Have a little work to do to reverse these affects, including some of the suggestions from Showshoe. Also read to move slowly around her initially and even pet her on chest and under chin (not on head) until we can break the cycle. Confusing because she does pee from excitement also, so I am hopeful with these subtle changes and some time she will grow out of it.
My nieces dog used to do this, he eventually grew out of it - he's four now. They had people greet him outside to save the carpets!
Hattie used to pee on our dog trainer's shoe as she was so excited to see him she did grow out of it. I would say Lindy, don't scold her for it as that won't help and could make matters worse. I'm sure she will grow out of it x
My brother's Standard Poodle always wees when I visit. She is 7 years old and has always done it. I suspect she is slightly incontinent from early spay (at 6 months), so coupled with the excitement of seeing me, she can't control a little bit of a leak.
