Hi my 5 months choc lab has been very sick, couldn't even hold down water. Vet had given me probiotic paste and we have her on diet of chicken and rice for 48 hours. Can we give her chicken and boiled potatoes does anyone now or any better ideas. Thanks
HI our vet said her tummy was soft ,which was good, no temp or dehydration, keep her on chicken and rice for 48 hrs,but she is really hungry. She hasn't been sick since late yesterday so I wondered if i could give her something like potato to foo her up a bit more without upsetting her tum again. Also when i start her back on her kibble surely I don't give her the usual amount,or do i? She already looks so thin! Any help much appreciated
I would follow your vet's advice and stick to chicken and rice for 48 hours - it's good that she's been keeping that down. You can always continue the chicken and rice after the 48 hour period and reintroduce the kibble gradually, but usually once they are over the bug they bounce back really quickly.
Definitely stick with your vet's advice . The fact that she is hungry is a good sign. She'll survive on rice and chicken for a couple of day. And once she is eating normally again she'll soon regain any weight she has lost. If you start giving her more to eat before her tummy has had a rest, you risk triggering more vomiting.
Thankyou for your help, I will continue with chicken and rice and then slowly reintroduce her kibble. I'm relieved she's so much better tonight
Hi just an update, Isla is much better today and I have just started her back on her kibble so hoping she takes this well, but she was more her usual bouncy naughty self, thank goodness, despite the heat!
Hi guys, I spoke to soon,Isla has been sick again this lunch time,I'm really worried, she's brought up all her breakfast and she's restless, can't settle. Can't get appt until later at vet but wondered if anyone has any ideas, don't want the vet to just suggest chicken and rice again in case it's something serious, but maybe I'm panicking. thanks.
Hi mandyb yes we've seen the vet,he's not sure what's wrong,Isla has a temperature now as well and she's lost some weight so he's given her some antibiotics and we've got to take in a stool sample when she does one,as she hasn't done any today or i would have taken it with me. She's back on chicken and rice. If continued vomiting then do bloods. I feel so sorry for her, she's very quiet, can't wait to get my naughty puppy back!
Oh dear, you must be so worried. But puppies do usually bounce back very quickly, even from quite nasty bugs. I hope she is feeling better soon.
hi there thanks for your comments,I know I'm panicking because we lost our beautiful girl saffy in January, she was sick suddenly one evening, then later that night she vomited just blood,we rushed to out of hours vet and she deteriorated really quickly, it was such a shock and we had to make that awful decision. I know she was elderly at 12 and Isla is a young pup but I can't help but make comparisons. Sorry for rambling but that's why I'm so worried.
Hi carys, we think she is again on the mend, hopefully the antibiotics will do the trick. We kept her on the chicken and rice for longer this time and slowly added kibble. She is more like herself just seems extra tired with puppy spurts of mischief in between! Really horrible seeing her so poorly. Not sure what is wrong, if its infection, intolerance to something in her food? Hopefully she's post the worst
