Last night i started training puzzle to put her toys away when told to as she loves to take all of her toys out of the box and leave them lying around the place for people to trip over them. We started just with some basics hold's, then a few fetches, then getting her to put the toy in the box on return from fetching when told, she got the hang of it towards the end, but we still have a long way to go. Has anyone else taught there dog to put their toys away after playing with them?
Re: Putting toys back in toy box I had a go at teaching this to our previous dog - we got to the point where he'd do it but had to be cued at each stage (cued to get each toy then cued to take it to the toy box then cued to drop it in). He found it a bit confusing, having been taught to retrieve to hand. It was quicker to pick them up myself, LOL. It's a great trick if you can crack it though
Re: Putting toys back in toy box She has no problem with dropping the toys in the box herself, i just point to the box and she will drop the toy in the box with no need to tell her to drop
Re: Putting toys back in toy box Could never manage this with my children - cant imagine that it would work with the dog... Come to think of it, OH isn't terribly good at putting his tools and various bits of gear away, either... Maybe they all have ME trained to do the tidying up??????
Re: Putting toys back in toy box Maybe you could try clicker training him using some roast chicken , or for puzzle she just got her own kibble
Re: Putting toys back in toy box I do this with the youngest 2. I kneel by the toy box with a hand full of kibble, and shout 'tidy up time', and they both rush around finding a toy, and dropping it in the box, they get a reward, and then they're off charging round the room getting more toys before the other one finds them all! I can't remember exactly how it came about for Harry, but Charlie has just copied off him really. Except she's tried picking a toy OUT of the toy box, and presenting it for a treat! Women eh. And Karen, have to agree, never managed it with the kids, still can't and they're all growd up! x
Re: Putting toys back in toy box session 3: Getting a lot better, will willingly fetch toys from down the hall and place them in the box, even a few toys that she had his else where made there way into the box so she is learning. She prefers to tidy her tennis balls, rubber bones and rope toys away, not so keen on the squeaky bones but with some encouragement she gets there in the end. Next step is to start 'hiding' the toys around the house rather than having them all in one pile.
