We have a lot of rabbits about this year. Very cute baby ones but unfortunately they have found their way through the fence into the garden and Scott and Scout have found the new delicacy that is rabbit poo !!!

Some of you might recall I have what could be called a slight phobia of my dogs getting upset stomachs. :-\ . I know it's irrational but i wonder every day if they will get a bad stomach. I think it's something to do with my old lab having colitis for the best part of 15 years. You see I am nuts. ;)

Saturday morning when I got them out of their pen there was a puddle of bile. Obviously I don't know which dog. :(. They, touch wood, have been fine since. I'm as sure as I can be they didn't eat anything that wasn't edible or vegetation. My three possible causes are rabbit droppings, they only started eating it Thursday and Friday. Saturday and Sunday didn't eat any and no bile. Grass or grass seeds irritating the stomach once empty although nothing in the bile or one of them fancied trying a slug or snail in the early hours. Unfortunately these do get in their pen. A couple of weeks ago one of the dogs was sick in the night and from all the evidence it pointed to a snail.

Before I let them loose in the garden I check for cat muck and pigeon muck as they caught campylobacter from that a couple of years ago, see nuts ;), but there's no way I can get rid of all the rabbit droppings. :(

I just wondered if anybody had seen any adverse effects from rabbit droppings. I've found out it's a high source of digestive enzymes and wondered if that could have increased bile. Then again I'm just guessing. I suppose if they eat more and the bike happens again I will know. The sensible thing is to forget about it but of course now I'm wondering what I will find in their pen in a morning.

    Wish I wasn't so paranoid. :-\

    Re: Rabbit poo

    Hi Jen

I own two rabbits. They live indoors but go in a run in the garden when the weather allows it. Penny quite happily keeps my garden rabbit poo free by hoovering it all up any chance she gets and so far she has had no adverse effects!!

The biley sick could just have been a coincidence, but I agree - if it happens again after them munching down the rabbit poo it could be the cause. However rabbit poo is made up of nothing but plants so I can't see much in there that could upset them. The rabbits themselves won't eat anything toxic so therefore shouldn't excrete it. Rabbits are strictly vegetarian, unlike cats or pigeons so their poo is a lot more pleasant. Also a wonderful fertiliser!! ;)

Meg has eaten rabbit poo every day since we got her. She is now 15 weeks and touch wood never had an upset tum. She has also had left over bits of dead mice and rabbits thanks to our kind sharing cats ;)

We've had rabbits too, the dogs loved hoovering up the poo with no ill effect.
    Same with Guinea Pigs
    And Chickens

Varied diet our dogs have :)

PS They never liked cat poo much

Holly is partial to a bit of rabbit poo. She finds some most days and it seems to have no effect on her. Neither does horse poo, cow poo, sheep poo .... you get the message :)

Not another poo thread ! Im now a bit worried about campobactylr, as Otis regularly hunts out the cat poo in the garden. Thing is he scoffs all kinds of muck, the yuck yuck dog poo in the park, which I hate, has gone off his own since feeding a raw diet though. He seems to have a cast iron tum, only had bad runs once or twice. Sometimes gets a bit loose after to much muck though, isnt this delightful ! xx

Ah Jen...I can't help,we don't have rabbits here....well we did.....one! :D You would say you never have one rabbit....but our park did :D it was obviously an escaped, dumped pet :( anyway it's gone now ???
You aren't being paranoid, you've had a really rough do with your last, dog so it's bound to make you cautious....gosh I remember when I was getting Dexters tummy settled down ,my heart would sink when we started another runny poo do ,so I completely understand. No one else seems to think rabbit poo so the snails are a candidate?not meaning to be a scaremongering but snails aren't good either are they?ill look it up x

Lungworm...UK people probably are aware sorry.....Dexters spot on treatment prevents this but it's never been discussed as a threat in Dubai

    http://www.dfordog.co.uk/article-be-lungworm-aware.html

Modifying to say I'm not for putting this forward as an explanation Jen x it was just a follow up to my wondering about snails....x

    Re: Rabbit poo

Thank you all for your rabbit poo experiences. ;D

They managed to Hoover up quite a bit this afternoon so I will see what happens tomorrow. ::)

Thank you very much Angela for going to the trouble of looking up lungworms. I know about them and slugs and snails but I didn't know that much about them. I don't think they are habitual snail snackers. They usually have a look then ignore them but I did think they might have had a lick. They are due to be wormed and I was going to go and get some wormers this week so l will ask the vet about it.

Also thank you Angela for trying to not make me sound neurotic about my dogs' stomach even though I know Iam . ;)
