just wondering about something- such a silly thing, really.....our 4 month old lab- Gonzo- dribbles (haha! major understatement- he really slops!!) water all over the floor every time he drinks water- will he ever outgrow this?? is this a lab's customary behavior?? so silly to wonder about this while we are still dealing with his usually 5 a.m. wake-up call!!
Re: random silly question! Penny is also a really messy drinker. The one thing that seemed to help was buying a larger water bowl so that when it slops out the side of her mouth it just goes straight back into the bowl! Also one of those absorbent floor mats (like a turtle mat or something) under the bowl will help to soak up spills.
Re: random silly question! Very common in our house! Thunk I might invest in a mat Lauren. Getting into summer there will be more base feet around
Re: random silly question! My German Pointers used to do this, so I put the water bowel inside a washing up bowl so any slurps go into that and the carpet stays dry.
Re: random silly question! Just wanted to say hi. I don't know much about slobbery labs but have had 3 slobbery Newfoundlands and they are closely related some am guessing its normal. Will be thinking of you at 5am there is a bunch of us on here enjoying early birds song Emma and Meg 16 weeks.
Re: random silly question! Hi from another 5 O'clocker!! : my 13 week old slops water everywhere! Not just around the bowl, but across the floor! I might try the larger bowl suggestion!!
Re: random silly question! Murphy makes a ridiculous mess when he drinks and hes 1! He seems to hold it in his mouth and then walk around so it dribbles all over the floor! Lol
Re: random silly question! Charlie has an enormous water pot. On a big turtle mat - a really big one. He slurps and splashes like he is in "the world's noisiest drinker" competition, and tanks down the whole bowl. Then, he slobbers and drips his last mouthful (about a pint, it seems) across his pen, through the breakfast room and all the way to the kitchen.
Re: random silly question! lol! thanks to you all!! i don't think a larger bowl- or a mat- will help as he gets it basically all over the kitchen floor!! not a big issue- i just towel it up & go on. i think i just wanted to make sure he is "normal"! & sounds like he is!!
Re: random silly question! I think Pippa posted this before. Secret Life of Dogs - Alsation drinking in slow motion
Re: random silly question! I got a large plastic "tray" on which we put our boots on in the Winter when we come in from outdoors so they dont drip all over the floor. It picks up some of the dribble but not all. Luckily, I have tile floor so just need to dry it. Guess we all have the slobber problem! Good luck with the 5 am thing.....I'm lucky....he sleeps eight hours straight.
Re: random silly question! @ Jacqui- oh, that's so funny!! exactly why we only give Gonzo about a quarter bowl full of water at a time!! i can only imagine the mess he could make with a full bowl!!
Re: random silly question! He he ;D Harley is a very noisy drinker and leaves a huge mess all over her mat at 10 months old!
Re: random silly question!
Murphy makes a ridiculous mess when he drinks and hes 1! He seems to hold it in his mouth and then walk around so it dribbles all over the floor! Lol
I think Penny does this too... We joke about how she likes to share... ;D
Re: random silly question! Yep Milly is also a huge mess maker when it comes to drinking. We have the big bowl, Matt underneath and the kids trained to grab a towel when they hear her drinking. They have realised if they wait next to her while she drinks they can grab her when she is done and clean just the area near the bowl. Lol if not it's all over the place. Milly also likes the splash her feet and dig in the water bowl so the quicker we get to her the better chance we have of stopping at least the feet splashing. Hehe
Re: random silly question! I am soooooooooo lucky, Riley is ridiculously neat. However when my in-laws dog comes to visit that is a whooooooole other story ;D ;D ;D It's like it's rained indoors I never knew one dog could spread water that far and he consumes in what seems like vast quantities but that's probably because his quaffing doesn't actually result in him drinking much ;D
Re: random silly question! Sam is in the messy drinker club too, trails of water all over the kitchen, then he will come into the sitting room and shake his head
Re: random silly question! The video of the Alsation drinking is amazing - it seems strange that dogs haven't evolved a more efficient way of taking in water, as so much is wasted. Molly is another splash-it-everywhere dog.
Re: random silly question! Meg is a member of messy drinker club as well. Always has been and when she's finished slurping and turns away from her bowl, it still dribbles from her mouth. Bought large plastic mat and put under water bowl, but still have to mop up. Funny, when she eats she's very sedate, no gulping food, she just takes her time.
Re: random silly question! We have a mat and a tray down, some still gets on the floor! Zaba, visiting us, carries it in his mouth and deposits it on your knee! If you see him drinking you have to be quick not to get a soaked lap! (He's the pooch on the left )
