Is it too soon to give Izzy one of these?

I've stopped giving them completely as my greedy pup swallows them while one end is soft and the other still hard and its a choking risk. Back to kongs only til my two are less competitive or I find something safer ::) it's a bloomin minefield!!!

My older dog eats these - just settles down and chews them to eat. He gets a small, straight one each day, and loves them.

I do watch him, and make sure I buy decent stuff without any nasty chemicals left over from the production process.

I'd wait a while before trying a very small pup with one though....

We allow our labs rawhide chews, but only recently. I monitor them carefully, and about halfway through the chew I swap them for a fish stick as I prefer them not to eat a whole rawhide in one go. With my younger dog Benson, as a pup he had fish tree trunks, frozen kongs, chicken necks/wings or tripe sticks to chew on. :)

Julie, where do get the chews that Charlie has? I've tried a couple on Maisie, but they seemed to upset her tum.

I think rawhide can upset tums, no matter what the quality - if your dog just eats it (as Charlie does) I think it's wise not to give too much. Charlie is ok with rawhide from a firm called Armitage pet care, and sold under the brand "good boy".

He gets just one of these a day:

Have you looked at Farm Food Rawhide? They are the best ones I have found :)

Yes, I started with those - I saw the way they advertised their rawhide, which is just the kind of thing I was looking for - but they gave Charlie runny poo (although it could have been something else, it's always hard to tell).

I started my two when they were about 14 weeks, but watched them closely. They get one every couple of days now, but never unsupervised.

They are the best thing I know for keeping teeth clean.

    :)

    Re: Rawhide chews

Rawhide chews make all my dogs sick. And have the same effect on quite a lot of dogs. It seems that the broken up bits irritate the stomach. So if you are not a fan of projectile vomiting - beware :)
However, dogs do love them so I give the little ones to small puppies, but hold on to the end, and take it away as soon as it starts to break up.

With older dogs, I occasionally buy one of those giant ones as a treat. But I take it away when the dog starts to break it down and bits start to come away.

For young puppies rice bones are really good. Once they have adult teeth they scrunch them up in seconds but when Molly was little I found they kept her occupied for a good while. Rice bones also dissolve into a mush.

    Yes!

Gypsy loved rice bones and those hedgehoggy thingies :)

(until Tatze snaffled them and crunched them up in seconds - I had to be sure Gypsy was in her crate to chew on them!)

I gave Izzy a thin rawhide, she chewed on it for awhile, then left it so Archie got a 2nd one! My other dogs have always had them in moderation with no ill effects, but great teeth! Ill leave it till Izzys bigger and in mean time look for the rice bones.
