As you know, Poppy has been limping on and off for nearly four weeks now. She seems fine again today, so OH and I took her for a little walk along a very lovely little valley near us, with a stream and pond. There was a woman there with a big and beautiful chocolate Labrador. We put Pops on the lead and I explained she couldn't play, because she has injured her foot. The woman couldn't recall her dog! First he woofed at us, then he came bounding over wanting to play with Poppy - he was twice her size and she was a bit frightened so tried to run away but was on the lead.. The woman kept shouting at him and trying to grab his collar, while he kept bouncing all over Pops, who was twisting and turning on her lead... OH was FURIOUS. He was friendly enough, but over the top. And the woman didn't really apologize enough, she just kind of said 'oh, he really likes her!'. Grrrrrrr...
Re: Really annoyed Poor Poppy that's all you need when trying not to make an injury worse It seems we have all experienced this behaviour, Hattie had a massive choc lab virtually pin her to the ground a few months and no apology from the owner I hope Poppy is ok and no further damage xxx

I have just got back from a walk with Harley by the river and had a similar incident (except Harley isn't injured). A lab X ran up to Harley full pelt, Harley stood still and let him have a sniff. I called her and she started running to me when the other dog started chasing her at full pelt.....he pushed her over into a muddy puddle, stood over her barking, she was trying to get away, I was trying to get to her and trying to distract the dog, and the owners.......stood up the path chatting I had to call them to get him away. Harley was shaking for ages after and the owner said........absolutely NOTHING. So mad
Re: Really annoyed Thats just so not on Karen , especially as Poppy is restricted right now , not surprised you are angry Our two do go up to others to meet and greet but at least they will respond to being called away , just basic obedience training needed with so many dogs and its not rocket science either :

I get this a fair bit where i walk, i always have my two on lead when going home through park and the number of folk who just let their dogs charge up to us and cause chaos is unbelievable. Usually on mobiles not giving a hoot where their dogs are...and my two arent injured like poor poppy...ive started shouting over to folk now...getting very intolerant in my old age!!

Re: Really annoyed It is massively annoying (had months of it with Charlie's injury). I don't mind, really, so long as the owner is making an effort, after all, dogs will run over to other dogs, and everyone has failures time to time - it bugs me like mad when the owner isn't making an effort though. I always walk with someone else where there is likely to be off lead dogs. We give the owner a chance, and if they can't get their dog, we reach into our pocket and bring out a handful of juicy roast chicken, catch the dog, put it on a spare lead, and return it to the owner. If the owner is far away, we put the dog on a lead right away and walk it back to the owner (we explain why, of course).
Re: Really annoyed I like your approach, Julie. Hope Poppy is ok after being shoved around. It's really annoying when people don't take this kind of thing seriously enough.
Re: Really annoyed I hope Poppy isn't too traumatised! I've had a couple of incidences like this myself but Penny seems to bounce right back afterwards, and I don't mind too much as one of her issues is she thinks she can take on everyone! It does her good to learn that some dogs she has to be more respectful too. I have also been on the other side of the situation - where my dog is the one bouncing all over the other dog so I can see it from both sides. I ALWAYS apologise profusely and the other people don't seem to mind - Penny still has a puppyish look about her so I guess this works in her favour. I should add that I am working on this behaviour very hard and she always goes back onto her lead when we see an unfamiliar dog now - dogs I recognise I know who she will be ok with so I know when I can and can't let her stay off lead.
Re: Really annoyed I know, it wasn't that dreadful - and yes, I have been on the other end with Bones in his heyday, so I understand that sometimes things don't go to plan.. It was just that I explained so carefully that Pops was injured, and she just asked me if my dog was a boy or a girl and then didn't make that much effort to recall her dog until it was too late. So - if I'd had an injured male dog on my hands, would it have ended in a dog fight? Probably.
