I haven't had this problem YET but I would like to know how to prevent poisoning my recall when we take Hattie and Charlie out together. Hattie has a great 99.9% recall and Charlie obviously has not reached that YET, so if I need to recall both dogs on my 2 pips and only 1 dog returns will I poison my recall for 1 of my dogs? Obviously I don't want this to happen so wondered if anyone had any advice. Thank you as always :) x

A tough one Helen , I use the same recall for our two and it seems to work ok . Are you currently using the 2 pips for Charlie ? If so, then I would be inclined to keep using it , the same for both because its going to get very complicated if you have different signals for each of them . Millie usually follows Sam, so I dont tend to have the same problem as others who have two dogs might do x

If I thought Charlie wouldn't recall I would be tempted to recall Hattie with her name...."Hattie come" or whatever your verbal command is. If you think Charlie will come or will at least stay with Hattie when she comes back I would use the whistle.....

I've rarely had to deal with two dogs though :)

Yes Kate I use 2 pips for both dogs :)

Oh good I thought that's what I would do Barbara as Hattie has a great recall to voice or whistle but slightly better to the whistle, at least until Charlie is as good, ha ha wishfull
thinking  I wish Charlie followed Hattie Kate :(

    Thanks so much x

We are working as hard as possible on Charlie's recall to make this practical Ternaya, but when I do decide to bite the bullet I will let you know how we get on. We do walk them together sometimes to proof Charlie with Hattie and he returns without a recall after 3-5 minutes now, not the 1 hour it used to be :) x

I can't believe the progress you have made Helen.
Could you really imagine even ASKING this question a year or so ago?
We would all be over the moon to hear that you had walked and recalled them together :)

I practiced in the house first, calling one and then the other to their dinners. When out I call the one I want by name. When I had the German Pointers, I had different whistle signals for each dog ;D

Truthfully I never thought we would get to this stage, 5 minutes still feels such a long time but when he's done the 5 minute burn off he comes back we pop him on lead, off to another place and off lead, returns in 3 minutes back on lead, off lead again back in 2 minutes all with no recall whatsoever. We are very slowly increasing his off lead time in the hope that he will have mostly off lead and is good fun and coming back is even better :)

It's been over 2 years Jac, oh how time flies when your having fun ;D We too would be over the moon to recall them together but I am worried about it. David has taken them both out recalled them Hattie bombs back, Charlie has swerved towards him but Hattie has this terrible thing where she has to tell Charlie off so runs to him and he sometimes turns the other way so not sure if he would have recalled :-\

Stacia good ideas there but I think I would find it difficult to have different whistle signals for each dog especially as I have trained 2 pips for both dogs. xx :)

No advice but I think you must be thrilled as it was only a few months ago that you were in despair at Charlie ever learning a recall - and look at him now!

Thrilled, thrilled, thrilled just about covers it, having gone from zero to at least a recall is great for us even if it took Charlie the rescue absconder over 2 years he is nearly there!
