Hi guys! My 6 month black lab has a residual tooth in front of her perminant canine tooth. I just noticed it, and her canine seems to be fully developed. She doesn’t like me messing with her teeth so it’s difficult to get a picture. Has anyone been in this situation? Do you think it will come out on it’s own? I don’t want her to have problems but I also don’t want to pay a fortune for something that will resolve on its own. My vet is really expensive. I keep trying to play tug of war and encourage chewing on that side, but she understandably prefers to chew with her back teeth Thanks in advance!
Hi and welcome . The baby tooth will most likely come out on its own as the adult one strengthens . Having said this, one of my dogs did have to have a baby tooth removed by the Vet , as they can become infected underneath , so keep a close eye on her , they don't usually cause problems .
I would have a chat with the vet. I had this with Bramble at around the same age. The baby tooth unknown to me had permanently stained the adult canine growing underneath, even though it fell out eventually. In a similar position, again would probably get the baby tooth removed.
My dog Obi had to have a persistent/retained canine removed by the Vet (this was before we got him so I don’t know which one). Normally, the root of the ‘baby tooth’ kind of dissolves or disappears before the adult tooth comes through and the baby tooth can then come out in advance. This process has not happened in your pup. If the tooth isn’t wobbly then it probably isn’t going to come out by itself as the root of the tooth is still there. There are a few risks with doing nothing, such as the permanent tooth ending up in the wrong position, gums not forming properly around the permanent tooth and pockets forming that will encourage decay in both teeth (meaning his permanent canine might also eventually have to go as well). I would take your vet’s advice on this. If the Vet says to extract it then get it extracted. Another option is to get a second opinion on it from a veterinary dentist who has Postgrad dentistry quals and who specialises in teeth. It’s expensive but leaving it could end up being a lot more expensive, and a lot more painful for your dog.
Is it a baby tooth or an adult tooth? Xena has this, but it's not a baby tooth, it's an adult tooth! It has a name, can't remember what it is. Vet had a good look, but this extra shark tooth doesn't appear to be having a negative effect on her bite, so he said that it can stay there until (if) she needs surgery for something else. Penny is now 7 and a half months and she had a baby tooth in front of an adult tooth for about 6 weeks i worried about it then noticed it loosen and wobble then fell out. Her teeth are perfect with no pain and adult tooth seemed to move to where it should have been
