    Hi there,

I am a new chocolate lab mommy. My baby girl is 6 months old (I got her at 6 weeks). She is very spoiled and attached to me. I have been working with her on training and she is doing well but needs more advanced training to move onto the Therapy Dog team to visit cancer kids at hospital.

I have her spaying surgery scheduled for next Thursday, June 7 and then we go on our first vacation in 4 years on June 21 (my cancer child is now in remission and we are celebrating). I found an excellent place for RouxBee (pronounced Ruby) to be bordered while we are away for 4 days and they also have training programs there. I am already worried and anxious about leaving her.

My question is June 21 is exactly 14 days after her surgery. Is this safe to have her bordered at a play area with other dogs? She will be getting lots of play time as well as a training evaluation to see which session to go into after we get back. Should I be worried?

    Christine (RouxBee's Mom)

Sorry, I don't know the answer to your question, my mongrel girl Belle was back to normal after her 7 (or was it 10) days enforced lead walks after a fairly complicated spay. Is your Lab having a laparoscopic spay or open surgery?

I hope you have a great holiday, celebrating your child's remission - that's really worth celebrating big style.

Although they have their stitches out after ten days and the dogs themselves think they are very fit, I would be concerned about my dog being with dogs and playing at that early stage after her spay. It would be a good idea if you asked your veterinary surgeon's advice, he/she will know better than anyone.

open surgery. Vet says she should be fine in 10 days and bordering place says they will give her extra rest if she needs it. So I think I am okay just being an over anxious mom lol

I am very anxious about it. I called and spoke to my vet (who is also a family friend) and he says she should be fine at 10 days but I also called the training/bordering facility and they said they would give her extra rest if vet and I thought that advisable. She will be in an indoor air conditioned facility and they will evaluate her as needed. The facility is highly recommended and has great reviews. I have done extensive research to find them lol. So, I think she will be okay. I am just a very anxious mom lol. I have had other pets in my life but none that were solely my own and belonged or bonded to just me. I truly never thought I'd love a dog this much. Probably has a lot to do with my son's cancer journey too. But she is just my baby and she is beautiful - LOL

She is going to be a therapy dog for cancer kids in hospitals. She will also visit elderly in nursing homes. Just got to get through all the training - she is smart but spoiled and stubborn.

Welcome to the forum, from me and my big boy Pongo! You are not alone in being an anxious puppy-mom, I was a wreck the first few times we left Pongo in day care and kennels. But he loved it (of course). And if they are a professional set-up, then they will take very good and expert care of your little girl.
Love the name RouxBee! Pongo's "official" name is spelled Phongeaux. (There was alcohol involved. It's a long story.)
