I think I know the answer to this one from other posts, but just checking...

Pongo (VERY unusually for him) has had the most horrendous diarrhoea since yesterday morning (Weds). He was also sick a couple of times on Tuesday. I'm fairly sure it is down to a large cooked lamb leg-bone that he got hold of and ate most of on Monday. ::) He threw up a few pieces of bone (very sharp, very scary) and then passed a few more bits (less sharp) in his poo on Tuesday.

Anyway.... no more sickness, and he seems absolutely fine in himself, eating with great gusto, no signs of discomfort..... just really, really runny poo (and quantities of it) for the last 48 hours. He is drinking plenty of water (and we've been adding lots of water to his kibble too) so he shouldn't be dehydrated.

So, having read lots of posts on here I'm putting him on chicken and rice from tonight rather than his usual kibble. Am I right in thinking that's a reasonable thing to try to firm him up?

Yes, chicken and rice is good, but I would starve him (gulp!!!) for at least 12 hours first, give his tummy time to settle down. In other words, if you feed him twice a day, miss one meal. If possible.

Yes a bland diet is best and Karen is right I'm afraid starve. If it lasts more than three days you might need to take him to the vet as it could be a bug he needs help to get rid of. If it's the bone or something else he's eaten you should see an improvement with in three days. That's what me vet told me anyway.

I hope he feels better very soon.

If it is too much to contemplate, then just a little bit of cooked plain white rice might keep him going until the morning... but 'nil by mouth' is really the best remedy.

If one of my girls get diarrhea I also give them a bit of probiotic powder to try to help things back to normal. Its for dogs, the brand is called Eagle Pack, but I am in Canada.

I am too soft. Didn't have the heart to completely starve him. He has had a little rice and a very little chicken tonight. He says that was quite nice as a starter thank you very much but when is his real dinner coming????

Poor boy - I bet he is hungry!
I usually end up giving a small amount of chicken and rice rather than starving - I'm too soft as well ;)

I've not starved mine yet, just straight onto a small C&R meal if they get runny.

    How is Pongo today?

    How's Pongo ?

To tell you the truth I don't completely starve mine either just give them a little bit. ;). I've found it depends on the vet some say starve some say feed. Always starve for vomiting though.

If he seems to be improving you can increase the amount gradually over a couple of days then reintroduce his normal food over three days until back on normal rations.

    Hope he's feeling better. :)

Re: Runny diarrhoea for a couple of days

Thanks everyone! Some progress..... in fact last night he produced something that 'almost had a shape' :p rather than just being a puddle. No poo at all this morning on his usual run round the garden so I suspect there's nothing much left in there to come out! (Pongo is certainly trying to tell me he is starving to death.)

Taking him out for his main walk in an hour or so, so hoping for something more recognisably turdy then!

    Rosie

PS on reflection, Pongo is ALWAYS trying to tell me he is starving to death, so perhaps nothing unusual there....

Don't worry if he doesn't go. ::). Like you said there won't be much left and he's not getting the usual amount in the other end. Scout once went 36 hours before he went again.

Glad things are a bit better this morning. But don't go straight back to his normal food, give it another day on the chicken and rice.

Much better production on Pongo's latest walk! :) Still not what I'd describe as 'kickable' but certainly heading in the right direction.

But we will keep him on chicken and rice for a couple of days. He thinks it is Christmas (although the portions are disappointingly small....)

    Thanks everyone...

I always apologise to mine when I feed them C&R that there's no seasoning :D

It really is pretty bland, but they seem to love it!
