There have been several posts/articles about the health benefits of these oils. My bitch Molly has skin sensitivity to various things and it seems mainly grass. I have used coconut oil since she was quite young and in the main it's effect has been positive. Her coat is soft and shiny. Her previously dry scratchy skin is also soft and clearly less irritated. However, I have seen in the press recently that coconut oil, previously seen as a healthy alternative is now considered as dangerous as other high fat oils. As a result, I am thinking of switching to salmon oil but I am not happy with the cloudy gloopy stuff I have seen in the pet shops. Has anyone got a suggestion for a good salmon oil that will help with Molly's sensitive skin and if so, where to get it?
Fish4Dogs do a good salmon oil, or I use one from Zooplus which isn't cloudy. Fish oil is, I believe, far better for your dog than coconut oil, because of the added Omegas, but it's still a fatty oil, so you have to be aware of the caloric value and adjust the dog's food accordingly.
We use Fish4Dogs Salmon Oil for our older Lab Sky. Have done for about 2 years. Just a small amount on her kibble daily. Order direct from Fish4Dogs. Sky's coat is glossy and we like to think it helps her joints. I have thrown the coconut oil that I used for us away.
We get salmon oil from CSJ (which is also where Pongo's food comes from, his breeder recommended them and we've never changed). It looks really good quality to me, and Pongo's skin problems have simply disappeared since we started using it. CSJ salmon oil and Kronch salmon oil are the same, they come from the same manufacturer. It is an excellent oil.
I do believe salmon oil gave Snowie a lovely soft coat. But since stopping it about 6 weeks ago and then stopping all fish products about three weeks ago, he's been significantly less itchy. So I think he is possibly allergic to fish. Vet said if it works, i.e. no fish, then stick with it, but only definitive way to know is extremely expensive allergy test. So, while each dog may be allergic to different things, keep this mind and monitor your dog's itchiness in case it gets worse! For the record, I adore coconut oil -- a teaspoon in my black coffee every morning. Delicious! As to what you read in the press... my philosophy is: the best medicine is the one that works. Next week you might read something else in the press.
I've used Fish4dogs, another oil from Zooplus and am currently using PetsPurest and haven't noticed a significant difference in any of them apart from price
I gave Oban a 3-6-9 Omega compound made from borage, flax and salmon oil. It helped his dry, harsh coat. However, I ran out of his stuff once so gave him the OH's derived solely ( ) from fish omegas. From salmon, not sole. In one week the coat deteriorated. A year later when I ran out again I deliberately, once again, tried the pure fish oil, same thing. Once the itchies started the 3-6-9 did nothing. Oban is not on them now, no longer is itchy. He's taking TCM.
How very true - and I was also told by our vets about the very expensive and not necessarily conclusive allergy tests
I should add, Oban also had a serious gut issue, Lymphangiectasia. Now that is under control his itchies have disappeared. Some Vets now believe itchies, allergies, poor coat and others stem from gut issues. Where exactly the TCM fits in I don't know. That's the tenet of Holistic medicine, the body is one whole interactive unit, not just one that itches and a completely separate one that has diarrhoea.
Oh, worrying. I hope Molly doesn't have an underlying gut problem. Its confusing, the coconut oil seems to have helped, plus as she's got older and her skin has matured, she doesn't seem to be so sensitive. The sensitivity started when she was just a little pink soft bellied pup. Vet seemed to think it is a common chocolate lab issue - again I hope not. We also use coconut oil as an alternative for cooking and I really enjoy it. I believe the same thing as you. Everything in moderation. But we don't add anything to Harley's food.
