Hi, my beautiful 8 yr old black lab Flossie had what I think is a seizure of some kind today. We were out walking when it looked as if she had been stung, she was lifting both her back legs, then arched her back and lay down. She seem to be mildly convulsing but no foaming mouth or rolled back eyes. We were a couple of miles from the car with no means of moving her. Luckily this only lasted for about 3-4 minutes, we just kept soothing her and she eventually stopped shaking, then sat up. Within another couple of minutes she was walking again and was able to walk back to the car. We will take her to our vet tomorrow but I wondered if anybody had had a similar experience. We often walk in places that cars can't get to and I'm now worried about it happening again and not being able to help her. Sue C
Re: Seizure? Hi Sue , yes I have owned two dogs with seizures . First thing , try not to panic , some dogs can have just one and never have another . There are different types of seizure , some are more mild and the dog does not lose consciousness, but can be confused afterwards . If she does have another episode , try to film it to show to your Vet if possible , there are excellent drugs available if it is seizures but most Vets will adopt a watch and wait policy , ask you to keep a diary . Hoping all goes well for you , please let us know x
Re: Seizure? One of our dogs, a Labracollisatian, had seizures. We learned to spot the signs before they started - about 30 minutes before she would start glancing upwards. This meant that we were prepared for them. When they occurred we just cleared the area, darkened the room, and left her. We tried soothing her but she didn't recognise us and, on one occasion, bit me. She usually came out of them quite quickly. The drugs for managing seizures are very effective. I hope this is useful.
Re: Seizure? Thank you so much for the replies, they are very reassuring. Floss seems to be fine at the moment and we have an appt at the Vets tomorrow morning. I'll pass on what he says. Rgds Sue C & Floss
Re: Seizure? So pleased to read that Floss is ok at the moment , hoping all goes well at the Vets tomorrow x
Re: Seizure? Some vets aren't 'up' in their knowledge of epilepsy! I good site to read and belong to is the "Phyllis Croft Foundation For Canine Epilepsy', they are very helpful and supportive. My vet went onto a course they were giving, which I thought was very good of him. However, I hope it isn't epilepsy in your dog and it might just have been a pain reaction.
Re: Seizure? The Vet was really helpful, gave Floss a thorough check up and said that she was very healthy, good weight etc. She has advised a 'wait and see' policy before doing anything, blood test, mri etc and confirmed that we had done the right thing and also gave a few tips of what to look for in the future. Floss seems to be her normal lovely self and I feel reassured. Thanks for all the concern. Sue C
Re: Seizure? So pleased that you are feeling reassured Sue , this is the usual path Vets take . As I said before, it is not uncommon for a dog to have a minor seizure and then never have another, so try and relax now , relaxed but aware x
Re: Seizure? Thanks for letting us know. Hopefully this was a one-off and you have your normal, seizure free, Floss back.
Re: Seizure? Glad the vet has been reassuring. My sister had a collie who had a few fits in mid-life, but then went on to live to a very old age with no more fits and no medication. Fingers crossed your dog is the same.
Re: Seizure? Glad the vet has given her the once over and doesn't appear to be concerned. Hopefully it was a one-off
Re: Seizure? Sorry you've had such a horrid scare Sue, so pleased she seems fine now. Hopefully this will be a one off.
Re: Seizure? Really glad that you're feeling more in charge of it all, now that you've got some good info
