hi all, in desprite need of some advice. My seven month old lab has had a sensitive stomcach about three months ago we went to the vets and got some medicine for it we were under the impression it was an isolated incident. But since then on and off it seems to happen again. He is on royal canin maxi junior, but we have decided to change it to gibb of galstone (uk brand) as it was recommended by a friend of the family that had a lab with the same problem. Hoping my fellow lab owners can given me some advice, thank you
Re: sensitive stomach Oh dear, sorry to hear that. Do you mean he vomits often? I would say do be careful swapping over foods, do it very carefully and slowly, and then when you find something that suits your dog, stick to it. My old lab had a sensitive stomach all his life - every time I gave him bones or similar it would end up in a horrible mess the next day. Poppy (our current dog) has a cast iron stomach and seems to be able to eat anything with no ill effects.
Re: sensitive stomach not so much vomiting, its more diarrhea. Which just comes from no where as we are very careful not to give him too many treats. I know its more of a last resort as maxi junior is a very good brand but the breeder we got oscar from highly recommended it but i just feel its not helping the matter, also our previous dog was on gibb of galstone and she never had any problems.
Re: sensitive stomach In that case it might be worth taking a sample to the vets and having them check it for candida etc.
Re: sensitive stomach
hi all, in desprite need of some advice. My seven month old lab has had a sensitive stomcach about three months ago we went to the vets and got some medicine for it . He is on royal canin maxi junior .
Hi Lauren...I'm your girl for sensitive stomachs! Dexter is 15 months now...we had really soft ,runny poos for the first 2 months. We live in Dubai and had imported him from Scotland so consideration of that factor was taken into account......give him time to settle down after the flight, change in climate, different water etc We also got a Giardia diagnosis ( diarohea being a symptom) which didn't help as treatment ended up being 2 weeks of antibiotics and they can cause loose stools too.on my vets advice he was fed nothing but his kibble ( this made early obedience training really challenging,he wasn't very inspired to work just for his kibble!) On his arrival I had gradually ( over a weeks period) changed him from Eukanuba puppy to Royal Canin Maxi Puppy....once the giardia had been successfully treated my vet advised changing him to Royal Canin Gastro Intestinal Puppy.....it's for dogs with sensitive tummies......again no other food whatsoever just his kibble and I saw a great improvement..His stools are still moist ( really sorry,it will be breakfast time when most of you are reading this x) but have form ( ???) !he probably drinks more though than your average dog with us living where we do so I consider what we live with to be 'normal' for him. I gradually introduced steamed chicken breast and roast chicken ( skin has to be removed as that will upset him) and we get on ok with that.i think it was 12 months ( whatever it says on the bag) when I changed him over onto the adult Gastro Intestinal.Dexter drops weight really easily too. Hope that helps,it's such a worry when they are upset all the time....not to mention the cleanup operation when you are out on walks ........Chris,my husband did the early walk today.....the resulting explosion from the cheese 'incident' last night was not pretty apparently...... : silly dog! ;D Sorry, just modifying because I forgot to ask......what medicine did your vet prescribe? X
Re: sensitive stomach I also use the RC gastro intestinal puppy which I get from the vets. It has helped Harley's unsettled tummy. Might be worth a try?
Re: sensitive stomach Having had 3 labs now with sensitive stomachs ive found a hypo allergenic food with a single protein of fish and probiotic/prebiotic supplement works quite well. I used bio premium with my old lab but they changed it to a powder which the labs I have now weren't keen on . I now use lintbells yumpro bioactiv. Good luck hope you find a solution Jen
Re: sensitive stomach Sorry to hear you have this problem, it can be a bit depressing dealing with it I think it is really important though, to go back to your vet and let him know that the problem is still ongoing. He may want to check, as Angela has suggested, for Giardia or look at other possibilities. Good luck with sorting things out.
Re: sensitive stomach hi all thanks for your help, we have just currently bought him new food gibb of galstone and are currently slowly introducing him to that. The first time we took him to the vet the vet gave us Promax, as i said the problme comes and goes so we are never sure if its that we have given him too many treats or if hes same eaten something he shouldn't have. But if we see no improvement from this food we will definetely take him back to the vet; however whn we were at the vet she only spoke about what treats to stay away from she never really mentioned the food so its great to have everyones help recommending all of these different brands. Thanks all once again.
Re: sensitive stomach Hi Lauren . I've just thought of something. My pups had campylobacter when they were about 18 months. They probably got it from eating pigeon muck !!!! :. I don't know how often Oscar gets an upset tum but after the initial diarrhea which the vet gave the usual dose of antibiotics for my dogs would get an upset stomach roughly once a week. After about 3 weeks of this I went back to the vet. Initially like you I thought it was perhaps the treats or something which was why I'd not gone sooner. I had to take a sample of the diarrhea at its worse. That was sent off for testing. Campylobacter needs a specific antibiotic for I think it was 3 weeks to get rid of it. Which was why the first lot hadn't worked. It might be worth asking the vet about these resistant reoccurring bugs if he doesn't improve. Hopefully the new food will sort him out though. Jen
Re: sensitive stomach hi jen, its interesting you should say that i don't know if you can get campylobactor from eating rabbit poo as Oscar is quite often doing this when we are on a walk, (whats he like :). I think i might look into that and see if thats whats causing Oscars diarrhea, thank you for help. I'll get in touch with the vet and see what they have to say.
