Hi guys! I'm brand new here, just got a 8 week old yellow female a few days ago. When I took her in for her first vet visit, the vet recommended Sentinel for flea/heartworm prevention. My old vet recommended Trifexis and that's what my adult Lab is on. I like the pill for flea/parasite control since my pets are all over my bed, couch, etc - I've never liked the spot-on. What do you all use for flea prevention? Should I go with a separate heartworm prevention injection?
Re: Sentinel vs Trifexis vs Other? Hi and welcome Sorry, I've not heard of these two. Where are you based? I think different countries have different names for them?? Anyway, what is your pups name? How is she settling in? What's your older lab called?
Re: Sentinel vs Trifexis vs Other? Hi Naya! I'm in Ohio, USA. And that makes sense that they're called different things in different countries. What do you use for flea prevention? The baby is Abby, my older black Lab is Scout Abby is settling in okay, other than whining a bit at night. Scout just loves her and plays gently with her for hours.
Re: Sentinel vs Trifexis vs Other? Hello and welcome I think parasite control is something that's best recommended by your vet, because he will have local knowledge of the risks to your animals. For example, in some areas, heartworm and lungworm are big problems but not in others. My two are on Advantix, which repels fleas, ticks and mosquitos and Drontal for tapeworm and roundworm. Advantix is a spot-on treatment, which I was a bit concerned about, but it doesn't stain anything. Their coats look a little greasy at the application sites for about a day, but it doesn't seem to come off. If heartworm is a problem in your area then you should certainly look for a solution that includes that. Your best bet would be to talk to your vet about all the possible combinations. I wish they'd produce a one-table-fits-all solution!
Re: Sentinel vs Trifexis vs Other? I don't think Advantix kills Ticks it kills Lice which are different and not sure it has any effect on Mosuitos :-\ Might be worth checking Fiona x
Re: Sentinel vs Trifexis vs Other? Sorry it's Advantage that doesn't so all OK Fiona, sorry for the confusion x
Re: Sentinel vs Trifexis vs Other? Best to discuss with your vet particularly as some products aren't suitable for a young puppy. They will be placed to recommend the right products for your needs and those of your dogs.
Re: Sentinel vs Trifexis vs Other? This post is very timely for me as I have just been into vets to discuss Phoebes flea and worming treatment and have come out more confused and a little frustrated!! Last month they moved her onto Trifexis telling me it was better as it was combined, I didn't really question it in the vets but came away and looked it up online and realised that it didn't cover ticks which worried me. It also made her quite sick and the last few days both my husband and I seemed to have a few suspicious bites. After discussion with them today and also I said about going to the South of France in the summer and would need sandfly covered, they recommended changing her to Advantix and Milbermax, however they recommended she only needed the Milbermax 3 monthly. I have just looked it up (i am their worst nightmare!!!) and it looks like she is not now protected properly against lungworm as Milbermax is only licensed for lungworm if monthly. The response at the vets is that " i am thinking about it all too much" and "most people would only give the Milbermax 3 monthly". I have no idea what to do now.
Don't know if it helps but here in France but my vet recommends Advantix and Milbemax, both of which are administered monthly. This is her preferred treatment as it covers a wider spectrum and hey are so easy to administer, asAdvantix is a "Spot-on" product and Mibemax is chewable for dogs and Juno regards it as a special treat.
Re: Sentinel vs Trifexis vs Other? My dogs have no flea protection whatsover and they do not have fleas, have only had one flea on one dog in 31 years! I do not believe in putting chemicals in my dogs' bodies unless I had to do so. However, if heart worm did come to my part of the country I would then use a preventative.
Re: Sentinel vs Trifexis vs Other? I've had fleas on cats in the UK, even with flea collars, and they're not pleasant once they're in your house. The perils of playing with urban hedgehogs, I guess. Here, I'm less worried (although not entirely blasé) about fleas, but the really big issue is ticks, which can be a darned sight worse than a simple annoyance. Not to mention completely gross. I wouldn't be without my tick protection, no way!

My current cats are not allowed to roam, they are either in the house or in their cat enclosure but are still treated on a monthly basis as fleas do jump....... and I prefer prevention than cure. Juno is treated monthly as well again prevention rather than cure.
Re: Sentinel vs Trifexis vs Other? Guys, thanks for the "please consult your vet" but as I said in my original post, my two vets have two different recommendations. They're even at the same practice. The Sentinel was recommended for the puppy, but when I inquired about switching when she was older, the vet still recommended Sentinel. I understand the medicines are so similar that it's really personal preference. That's why I was asking about personal experience. FYI- Trifexis and Sentinel are both heartworm/flea/whipworm/roundworm protection, in a once-a-month chewable tablet. Might not be available in all countries. For the people who think certain diseases aren't a problem in your area: my dog contracted Lyme disease before I got him, and my vet swears Lyme isn't a problem anywhere within a 200-mile radius of here. I've heard similar stories from all kinds of people.
Re: Sentinel vs Trifexis vs Other? Hello, and a warm welcome to the forum. I'm based in the UK, where heartworm is pretty much unknown. I use advocate, and drontal as a tapeworm treatment. Time to time, I use advantix in addition to advocate, but not very often. I'm pretty pleased with these products and haven't had a problem. Some forum members have tried Bracvacto for ticks and been very happy with it. I use advocate because my dog is prone to ear troubles, and I want the ear mite protection. I also live in an area with lungworm and he eats snails from time to time. I use advantix because I find it extremely effective and although using both advocate and advantix means a double dose of imidacloprid, I found I only needed 2 doses of advantix to get through the whole season last year.
Guys, thanks for the "please consult your vet" but as I said in my original post, my two vets have two different recommendations.
I think it's perfectly reasonable, indeed very sensible, for people to say "please consult your vet". It might be wise to tell each of your vets what the other has said and explain different practice vets are giving different recommendations and this is confusing - or it may simply be that the products are much of a muchness and both recommendations are perfectly reasonable, but getting a vet to explain any differences in the products is a sensible thing to suggest. I have never heard of either of the products you mention. I'd search for a vet that I trust to be able to give me accurate information about the environmental risks in my local area, and take into account the specific lifestyle risk of my dog.
