Hello there Embarrassing problem! And I'm sorry for having to be so explicit in my post, but I'll try to keep it as dignified as I can! My 2 and a half yr old bitch Labrador seems to be a little over-sexed! I'm not sure if it's a problem or not but it's certainly not something I've come across before. She is well-socialised and knows lots of dogs, but we also vary our walks somewhat and she meets lots of new dogs too. A huge proportion of dogs (and bitches) we meet seem to make a beeline for her private parts - particularly dogs we haven't met before (but also her friends!) For the most part it's sniffing, sometimes licking and a number of dogs try to mount her. She doesn't like this attention and is becoming increasingly frustrated with it to the point she's started snapping at the approaching dog (rarely making contact, just snapping the air as a warning). In addition, when we're in the house, she spends a lot of "alone time" in *that* region! I don't tell her off but I do try and distract her into doing something else (usually a treat or a game) - sometimes after the treat or game she'll go back to her unfinished business! Also, twice she has taken this activity to its fullest conclusion - which isn't great to have to clean up! I'm starting to worry that when she was spayed something wasn't quite right, because it feels like she's permanently in heat. The problem has been around for about a year but we're about to move house and she will be meeting lots of new dogs in our new town and I'm worried about the snapping and unsociable behaviour she is starting to display and which I think is about this privates business. Has anyone come across this before? Howard.
I would pop her to the vets - she may have a little infection which is causing the licking and sniffing? .
This will sound odd but make sure the Vet takes a swab of her ears too. An ear infection can give off smells that intrigue other dogs. Why the other dogs would then target her south end when it's the north end that sets them off is unknown, unstudied too as far as I know. But it's happened enough it's worth the Vet having a look-see.
I too would be going to the vets to rule out UTI's or some other infection. Does seem strange that it happens so often.
UTI was my first thought, too. What does "fullest conclusion" mean? Did she urinate? I would ask the vet to also check if any damage was done when they spayed her. Best of luck and let us know how it goes at the vet.
