Just heard that the last dog from my old boy Bones' litter had to be put to sleep the other day. :(

We brought Bones and his little sister back from France with us. They were the offspring of my sister's chocolate lab and a local yellow lab. We were sure the puppies were going to be chocolate or yellow - but they all turned out black! One of them had white markings on his chest and was quite a bit bigger than the others - we thought a different male must have sneaked in there before the official mating, but looking on the internet I can see that he actually looked a lot like the original St John's Dogs, so perhaps he was a bit of a throwback... My sister kept him with her in France, he was a much loved dog.

Anyway, I nearly kept little Lily (as we called her), but finally decided to keep Bones instead, and Lily (renamed Shelly) went to live with a good friend of ours here in Germany. Bones passed away nearly two years ago at age 14, but Shelly kept on going, and would have been 16 on Christmas Day.

Odd to think that all the dogs from that line have passed on now. They were all absolutely lovely.

Her owner actually brought Shelly round to see us a few weeks ago... She looked very frail and old, but still happy. It was obvious it was nearly time for her to go. But yes, it is still a sad time. The owners are very, very upset.

So sad, it must have brought back memories of Bones - hopefully ones full of joy as well as reminding you of the loss.

Thank you everyone, you are kind. I usually think of Billy and Bones with a smile these days, but seeing Shelly so very old and frail reminded me of their last days and did make me a bit sad. :'(

But I have just cheered up by remembering that Bella, the labrador/dalmation cross who lives down our road, is actually also one of Bones' relatives!! Her father, Bones' brother, was the big boy with the white chest markings. Bella is also 12 years old now, but she is very sprightly indeed, and obviously looks on Poppy as her little sister, definitely one of the pack. :)

That is really sad :( Her owners must be feeling bereft, after 16 years together.

That is nice that there is still a connection to Bones in Bella :)

    :'(

I just dread this time :'( but it's part of the experience of having the privelege of sharing such a big part of your life with a 4 legged friend ...it's good to share that the pain of the loss changes over time so you are able to remember them with a smile Karen :*
