We live in hot humid Florida and although she stays inside 95 % other than nighborhood walks. Something is causing these terrible hotspots worse than ever this year. Bailey is 10 years old and for probably seven out of these 10 years we have dealt with skin allergies and have tried everything imaginable, food, special Shampoos, banixx pet, and medicines-she's currently on a 10 mg daily dose of prednisone, Benadryl, and thyroid medicine. This year she has developed so many hot spots that get big crusts on them and she ends up scratching them off I clean them with witch hazel put antibiotic ointment on them but I just wanted to see if anyone on this forum has found any great treatment for allergies and skin conditions. Definitely getting worse as she ages. Vet wants to give med that helps itching but $300 month. Not realistic for us to do. Feed Fromm gold. Already tried grain free etc. help :(

Hi and welcome. Sorry to hear about your girl suffering with skin problems. I have no experience of dealing with skin allergies so can't offer any advice. Can you tell us more about what she is allergic to as other members may be able to offer suggestions. Unfortunately dealing with allergies can prove expensive. What is the medication that the vet is suggesting?

We did not opt to have her run through the allergy testing As we changed food etc and determined it was probably something outside which is not realistic to say that a dog can't go outside and didn't feel it worth to,put her through that. I can't remember the name of the medication there is one that no one can seem to get anymore as its been on back order for couple years. It's the other one currently on the market.

We went to a Holistic Integrative Vet due to life threatening gut issues but along the way acupuncture, TCM and some homeopathy have cleared up not only the gut but also the allergies which were seasonal environmental. Catch is, it's not cheap.

Is the med you are thinking of Atopica? Or Apoquel? Oban was taking Atopica, it worked, but he's off it now. Apoquel is newer and it was in short supply for a while.

My sympathies for your itchy doggie.... Are the steroids helping at all?
