So watch out for those hard chew toys folks. Poor Cuillin has a slab fracture, booked into dental vets on Thursday for treatment. I'm feeling very guilty as I shouldn't have had them in the house :(. All now thrown out, and nothing like that is going anywhere near their mouths from now on...gutted for poor Cuilli, she isn't going to enjoy the dentist....

    Aww....no! Poor girl :-\
    Hope its easily sorted.
Are we allowed to ask what caused it or would that be impolitic?

Erm my legal background makes me hesitant to apportion blame but a popular non edible chew...knowing what Lily likes I can confirm it wasnt an Antos Hedgehog!

So sorry...hope recovery is quick and painless! Hate those chew toys too! It's not your fault; what are we to give them that is safe? At odds at what to let my 10 month old Lab chew on..he has devoured every chew toy that we have given him. We have tried to give him only safe, Vet approved toys such as: tennis balls, corded ropes, etc (with supervision of course); training toys with bird noises make him nuts and last about a second! My sister once had a Shepherd with that problem and she recommends an engine mount. Seriously! They run about 30 t0 50.00 U.S dollars and are allegedly impossible to chew threw or break; but hard rubber so not to hurt their teeth; if it hold up your engine it must be tough (a new one; not used d/t oil, and gunk from motor). Going to get one if the Vet Approves, as the poor dog needs something to chew on; he is obsessed with wood (fallen tree limbs, fire wood) and rocks...help! Any suggestions are welcome. Thank you and best wishes for your Lab.

    Re: Slab Fracture

Poor Cuillin. That's what my first Lab, Nicolae, did on a cow leg bone. In his case it was the fourth premolar, or the massive tooth in the top jaw. He split the side right off it, which is what a slab fracture is, right up under the gum too. Enormously painful. The vet suggested removing the tooth, but it was so large I didn't want that. The side of the tooth had not come away as the gum was still holding it on, so the vet glued it in place as a temporary fix and we found a veterinary dentist and he had a root canal.

The only sign that he had done it was that he shook his head few times and I noticed the tooth had started to discolour when I went to brush his teeth. It would've been excruciating, but he hid it. So, check your dogs' teeth regularly, people.

And don't feed weight bearing bones. I avoid antlers as well.

Poor Culli and poor Nicolae - yup, with Charlie the power chewer, no nylabones, antlers or recreational bones here. Strictly rawhide and a toothbrush for us! And kongs.

Yep you wouldnt know Cuillin was and is in any pain, she is still running about looking happy as larry and retrieving and carrying things in her mouth and doing vigorous facey biting sessions with brodick...but hers is a bad one too. It was only picked up during a routine check by brother in law vet, he referred her to veterinary dentist straight away. The only signs I can think of were a good while ago, cuilli always wakes up when the alarm goes off in full wag mode and charges out of the bedroom straight into lounge, grabs a ball, and does some triumphant Its A New Day laps round the house. That morning she just slowly walked into the lounge with no wag and lay down looking subdued. I was a bit worried about her but put it down to just feeling off colour and she picked up again the next day and was right back to her hyper waggy self. I wonder if thats when it happened....anyhow feeling terribly guilty and a shoddy owner and on the back of this we are now doing full tooth checks weekly. And if either of them ever looks off colour I'll make sure they get a good check out of everything too, dogs deal with severe pain very differently :(. Thanks for the good wishes everyone, Im going to have a good chat with the dentist about chews, and balls too as I think he has some views on tennis balls, and will share any advice I get

Debsie, I feel so sorry for poor Cuillin and you :'( I really hope the dental work goes well and she recovers quickly. Don't feel guilty it could happen to anyone and we all know you are an absolutely wonderful owner.

No nylabones or hard toys here, only rawhide chews and totally consumable bones e.g. chicken carcasses, turkey necks etc.

Sending lots of best wishes and {{{{xxxxxx}}}}} to you all also lots of licks from Hattie & Charlie xxxx :* :*

Poor cullin how horrible for her. I hope the recovery isn't too painful. Is she having the tooth removed debsie ?

My two but especially scout are major chewers. I've gradually got more and more concerned about their teeth hence the purchase of a kong goodie bone last week with fish jerky twists and sea wraps to go in it. It will be interesting to see how long it stands upto scouts nashers. ::)

    Thanks again everyone

Jen I'm not too sure what will happen to her tooth, hoping it won't have to be removed, but will see what they say on Thursday and let you know. The dental vets she is going to are really really good apparently, so hoping for a good outcome for wee Cuillin. She's really not going to like being left there, she's such a ninny...I'd be keen to hear how you get on wth the Kong Goodie bones, strangely enough its not Cuilli who is the frequent chewer in our house, its Brodick, who always used to lie down with the Offending Item after his big walk and have a lovely chew, he would chew himself into a sleepy haze and nod off where he was. He is really missing it since its been lobbed out. Both of them are power chewers however so please let me know if Scout's nashers are too much for the Goodie Bone!

Will do Debsie. Unfortunately I'm still waiting for my fish4dogs treats to stuff it with so they haven't really had them properly to judge yet. They didn't like carrot !!! They will eat anything unedible but apparently not carrot. ::). The treats should come tomorrow, apparently they've had a back log because of the bank holiday, so I will give you a damage report as soon as pos. ;D

Good luck and fingers crossed for Thursday.
