    Hi there,

I have recently noticed that the skin around my female puppy's (15 weeks) private area is slightly discoloured. it looks a little grey. I had thought perhaps it was just a normal aging thing as she doesn't seem to be in any discomfort, there is no swelling and she is washing no more than usual (although she has always washed this area a fair bit), but then I googled it :-/ !!!

She did have very mild puppy pyoderma when she arrived with us but on first visit to the vet he said she was fine so we only ever gave her one medicated bath. On reading about this Pyoderma comes up as a possible cause - could it be back?

We have only bathed her twice in the 6 weeks we have had her, once because we were advised to (due to the pyoderma) and once when a towel dry was just not enough to clean the mud off her coat after a walk in a rather muddy park. I was under the impression that you are not supposed to wash your dog unless you absolutely need to (is that right?).

Any ideas? Should I call the vet to ask or is this just a normal development in my little lab?

Lou and her pup Tatti :)

Hi Lou , I would definitely check with your Vet, it may be something and it may be nothing , but its not worth risking leaving it and as you are obviously concerned, then at least it will put your mind at ease , good luck and let us know please .

Agree with Kateincornwalls advice, will put your mind at rest. Re bathing, my two Labs, one will be 10 years old in March and one will be four years old in January and neither of them have ever had a bath. A dip in the pond in the summer or a good rain storm keeps them fresh. If they are very muddy, then they get wiped over, legs and tum, with a wet cloth. They do of course, get brushed and combed regularly.

Agree with Kate, a trip to the vet is advised just to put your mind at rest. My two Labs aged nearly four and nearly ten, have never had a bath! A swim in the summer and a good rain storm keep them fresh and regularly brushed and combed. If they are muddy, then their tums and legs are wiped over with a wet cloth.

Juno's been in the bath but only when she needed the special shampoo for her infected skin on her tummy, but even then it was only around the affected area and rinsed off with the shower head. It was just easier to manage it in the bath.

Lilly only gets a bath or shower if she has rolled in something.
    Lost count......

Seriously though, her coat is a lot better, and her waterproofing much more efficient the fewer the baths she gets.
I am a firm convert to Cowboy Magic Greenspot Remover - really reduces the need for an all-over wash. And there is nothing better than the feel of a soft coat after a thorough rain soaking :)

Sometimes it has just GOT to be an all over wash though.

    Disown them!!!! bleugh!!!!!!

Definitely try and find somewhere for them to swim before touching. Or wrap in something that can be burnt later. That is really grim!

But back to the original post - did you ever find out what was causing the discoloration on your puppy's skin?

Hi all, nothing serious, it was just a mild case of juvinile vaginitis - no treatment necessary, we just need to distract her when she is licking.

    No baths needed :)
