Most mornings Lady and I walk past some farm cottages where a small black cat lives. Lady and the cat have met before and Lady being a sensitive and considerate, gentle soul is scared to death of the cat. It's been fine for months with no problems, but the cat is now taking up regular residence at the garden gate ..... ..... SBD legs it back down lane and no amount of encouragement from me works. Forced to follow her I eventually manage to get within grabbing distance and put her on the lead. Lady not happy with this arrangment but does trot along past the "danger zone". It's a real pain. I'll have to remember to put her on the lead for a while. In some respects it's good that she doesn't chase cats. In other respects it's a nuisance that she's so timid. It would be nice if it was possible to turn on and off her hunting gene at will. If Lady has been picking up pheasants she is a different dog. Normally rabbits are quite safe and she ignores them, but on the shoot if she spots a rabbit within striking distance while we are walking between drives she'll go for it with real determination. It's as if she's a different dog. No interest in "doggy" smells, head up and looking for action all the time. Such a contrast. Anyway, back to the SBD and the SBC. Lead walking for a while I think. ;D
Re: Small Black Dog afraid of Small Black Cat Lucky for you Lady doesn't walk to chase the cat! Funny girl - she really is a sensitive soul, isn't she? Poppy thinks cats are a prey species and really, really wants to chase them. Except for my mother's cat, who sensibly sits on the top of the washing machine and HISSES fiercely… - Pops has a lot of respect for her!
Re: Small Black Dog afraid of Small Black Cat Oh bless her , it sounds like the cat knows it has the upper paw and is taunting SBD Sam is disinterested in all things small and furry, whereas Millie ..................... :
Re: Small Black Dog afraid of Small Black Cat Awww bless her soul. It's good she doesn't want to chase them though. We have a little black cat and a big fat white cat. Without a shadow of doubt the big fat cat rules the roost and Lola knows that. She does however try her very best to get the cat to play with her by throwing her toys at her. This usually ends with Lola being chased to the top of the garden behind the bushes. I think secretly she enjoys it :
Re: Small Black Dog afraid of Small Black Cat Oh David, whilst I don't like to think of Lady scared of anything I'd take a scaredy pup over the love of the chase of a cat any day! We can walk past on a visual with a cat reasonably well...but off lead...another story.... This was this morning ,they'd seen the cat ,we'd walked them away from the park and come back 15 mins later...... image by dexterpops02, on Flickr A passerby with a very big crossbreed on lead was heard to mutter 'what is it ?doggy disobedience day?' I was gutted and mortified....I can't ever forsee a successful recall from a cat chase, all I can do is interrupt before it starts :-[
Re: Small Black Dog afraid of Small Black Cat Oh Angela - it's always worse when there are two of them as well, they really egg each other on.
Re: Small Black Dog afraid of Small Black Cat They were dreadful Karen!really disobedient and both of them and totally delighted with themselves when they came back.....I'll never take a chance again!

Re: Small Black Dog afraid of Small Black Cat and at least Lady will move when you put her on her lead, if Rileys worried about another dog that he sees in the distance concrete bum sets in and he's impossible to shift ! hope the small black dog feels better about the small black cat soon x
