Ok now we all love our Labradors but they do have an aroma all of their own!

So - do we let them pong quietly with their labby scent or give them a bath to keep them (or mask!) their characteristic odour....

    Thoughts?

Pong in this house, and out of it as I can smell her on myself even when we not together! Never washed so much clothes before!

I had to apologise to the men in the garage for the smell when I took my car in for it's MOT. I think I've bathed Riley about 4 times in 2 years ;D

I think I have only bathed her when she has rolled in poo. And a couple of times before visiting family.
But since she goes hydrotherapy swimming she gets plenty of showers!
One week she was bathed 3 times.
Poo roll- swim- poo roll ::) ::) ::)

    We luv ya lilly :-\

Oh... Charlie still smells like a puppy.... I think it's an intoxicating smell, designed to make us love them.

3 months ago (!) he came home on the Saturday and I had to leave him on the Monday (OH on puppy duty that day)... I could smell him on my clothes (had cuddled goodbye) - made me rush back to him!

I thought a) he was an alien with fifty first century pheromones (well, puppy equivalent), b) evolution means pups today have a smell irresistible to humans...

Now, his alien puppy smell has me hooked, no doubt soon he'll smell dreadful... hasn't happened yet :) :) :) :) :)

Obi only gets a bath with shampoo when he has proactively filthied himself in something. Or if someone else is going to mind him overnight.

Other than that he just gets swims. I do wash his collar and harness regularly though - they seem to smell appalling pretty quickly. Obi himself seems to smell ok, but his collar...

I always feel embarrassed taking my car to the mechanic too, LOL.

We are too scared to try and clip Dexters claws so he has to go to the 'Salon' ;D.....they do a service called Summer Splash ( but all year round?)so when he is there he has one. He is showered down ( you can choose for you him to be soaped)ears washed, bum feathers trimmed if needed, very basic ......I like him to have it for him to be handled by other people too.If we've been on a sandy walk I hose his feet ,other that he's been bathed by us twice....once the day he arrived and he was VERY stinky from his airline box....poor puppy, and another time just to do it so he would be ok with baths! He smells like a dog.....and can smell like A hot dog at times but I don't think it's overwhelming......hard to tell when they are yours though isn't it?I have a very honest Sister......don't think she let me get to an unpleasant level! ;D

That familiar lab odour...not necessarily unpleasant no but as a person who has never had a fog and not used to doggy smells - they pong! I can tell immediately there's a dog in the house even though she's in a crate in the kitchen where the floors are steamed along with the cage and her bed v often! I think it's her that emits a slow pulsing dog smell! I'm used to it now and don't mind it too much but phew what pongy dogs they are!
My niece has a husky and he doesn't smell at all - I do think its a lab thing.

We're having two sets of friends over for dinner tonight and now I'm contemplating a short guest survey. "Please rate on a 10 point scale the degree to which this house reeks like an international Labrador convention".

Are they really that bad? I just can't tell. Probably not a good sign ;D

I think so yeah, they pong! Like a heavy musky damp sort of smell. Not over powering but I think it's there yes. The key I think is not to mind!! I've tried getting rid of it to no avail. Plan b - live with it. It's not like they smell disgusting - your guests will soon acclimatise to it I'm sure!! If they have dogs they prob wont even notice. Or maybe my Rosie is just a very sweaty Betty!!

I LIKE the Labrador smell; and I don't care what anyone thinks! 8)

Well, ok sometimes it can get a bit overpowering... But I never bath any dog unless they have rolled in something indescribable.

Angela - nail clipping?? Have never done that either... Probably once you can walk him more, you'll find you don't need to do tat either. :)

I know Julie....the saying goes ...'it's a dogs' life's ell I wouldn't mind having any of our dogs lives.....

Karen his claws get quite sharp because he doesn't walk anywhere hard to wear them down...especially the one that's further up the leg( correct name escaping me at the moment :-\,old age!)They have needed to be clipped twice in the time we have had him (4.5 months) and when he went in 2 weeks ago they just filed them ::) I should just stop talking shouldn't I ?!

iPad is currently on charge to attempt to video a demonstration of tooth brushing .....the 'Angela' way......I think Heidrun's video clip crown is more than safe! ;D

So I caved yesterday and bought a johnsons doggie deodorant for him. He smells like a girl! HAHA

    Much better ::)

Although I was called insane as it costs a bomb

    What smell? Me? No!

The name of the shampoo is "Fox Pooh" if you can't read the label in the photo.

    Snap!
    I have that one :)
I like it because it neutralises he eau de fox poo without replacing it with a scent.
I absolutely DETEST the smell of febreeze as it reminds me of vomit from when I used it when my kids were wee. Same with doggy shampoos we have used on the FP smell.
And I am sure there are some previous posts about using tomato ketchip or a tomato product to neutralise. Well.....took me a while before I would try ketchup on my chips again ::)

I was too afraid to ask ;D All of the guests managed to get and keep their dinner down so it can't have been too bad ;D

Obi does definitely have a smell but I like it. I have never sniffed another breed of dog at close range to compare.... wonder how that would go down at the dog park next weekend...?
