I am no expert, but my understanding is that smoked products of any sort are not advisable due to the high salt content. I am sure though a small amount would be OK. Maybe to be on the safe side, a quick call to your vet. Sorry I can't be more helpful.
It's just the salt. Salmon itself is fine. I wouldn't worry about it unless he's scoffed half a side of it.
Thank you He's been fine so luckily no harm done. Another thing to add to the list of stuff he's not getting again
Obi always gets a bit of smoked salmon when we have it. A small bit now and then is perfectly fine. No different to having a bit of bacon or salami. Some of those lists of what dogs can't eat have some pretty odd inclusions...
Maybe the website only said not for dogs because smoked salmon can have bacteria in it (listeria), because it hasn't actually been cooked. That's why pregnant women shouldn't eat it. So maybe not something for dogs that might have a weakened immune system - but for young healthy dog it should be fine. Yeah - the lists of what dogs can't eat are sometimes really strange. I wanted to know if peaches were ok, and lots of websites said you shouldn't feed dogs peaches at all because the stone is poisonous.
