Maslow has developed a new fixation! We had a massive thunderstorm last night (exactly what you want when your standing in the garden at 3am waiting for a 9 week old puppy to wee!) anyway he spent a significant portion of the time at the wall trying to chew on the bricks (a daily occurance!) this morning we went back out and he charged straight back to the spot.. I then realised he has a snail in his mouth! We swapped it out immediately and he hadn’t eaten it but I’m now paranoid that he’s hurt himself. Aren’t snails poisonous to dogs? Honestly between that and the leaping off the back step every chance he gets (despite me carrying him into the garden) I’m living on my nerves!
Snails and slugs are carriers of lungworms. Has he started his shots yet? Give your vet a call if you are worried.
Homer LOVED snails as a puppy. I was constantly getting them out of his mouth and swapping them with treats which is probably why he went to find more! I put out beer traps only to find that true to his name he had a taste for beer too!! He then went on from snails to pebbles. Where he found pebbles in out paved garden with raised beds I have no idea but he had quite a good pebble collection. Eventually he grew out of both obsessions and moved on to collecting socks instead. Constant vigilance and he'll give you lots of opportunities to reinforce the 'give' command.
He’s had his first shot but not his second, he’s also been wormed including lung worm so I’m hoping he’s ok. For the time being he’s only allowed in the garden on lead... not that he’s happy about it lol
Remember that worming isn't a preventative, it only works by killing worms that your dog already has at the time the medication is ingested. So if you believe he's at risk of lungworm, it's worth talking to your vet to ask if they advise another dose.
